Episode 239 of Love At First Scent

This was a YouTube Live broadcast streamed on Monday 20th December 2021. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.

In this episode, I reviewed the new Milano Fragranze brand, with a focus on Basilica, Diurno and Galleria.

--
Here's the blotter update...

- The Panettone dries down to a scent reminiscent of Christmas cake mix: honeyed, fruity and syrupy. But still too cloying for my tastes.
- Diurno manages to sustain that cheeky almond-boozy sweetness all the way through to its final stages.
- Galleria arguably becomes less interesting as it develops, settling on a heated leather. But its opening stages are well worth your time, I'd say.
- Basilica is superbly surprising, mixing up the herbs with the incense and the milk accord in genuinely curious, original ways.

I got the discovery set for Milano Fragranze earlier this year, and when I tried all eight of them, I knew immediately that "Basilica" was my favorite one. "Brera" is my second favorite, and I also like "Diurno". Currently, I'm not fond of "Galleria": it is my least favorite, and to me it smells like burnt rubber (maybe eventually I can appreciate it, but I doubt that). Recently, I bought a full bottle of "Basilica". "Basilica" might be one of the best fragrance releases from this year.

Thank you for a great video! I really like the creators behind this brand (and Masque Milano especially). Naviglio from our sample set has emerged as our favorite over the months. We don’t often go for the soapy scents, but the Marseille soap here is lovely. It sits nicely on our shelf next to the Rogue Perfumery Bon Monsieur for when that clean brightness is called for (perhaps a game of tennis, etc.). We originally rather tossed Naviglio aside as a “been there, done that” but it really is such a wearable & lovely scent. Happy Holidays & thank you for another wonderful video!
ps - yes about the za’atar!

For panettone, could the reference be the white candy made of egg whites, sugar, and pistacios, not the bread/cake version? Sometimes the white candy is called ‘french nougat’ in danish

Happy holidays and look forward to your best of video

The best meringue, the one which is guaranteed fallproof, is swiss meringue.

Had to look up za'ater: marjoram, thyme, sesame seeds, sumac, and oregano

Frankincense? I have a VERY old small bottle of Jovan's Frankincense & Myrrh perfume and it is wonderful. Truth to tell, it is almost indistinguishable from the even older bottle of Vol de Nuit that I found in an old shop. I remember the Jovan F&M that I loved in the 70s, and wore it on rotation with Cinnabar and White Linen. Good luck with the meringue.

For meringue, I find the trick is not the recipe of ingredients except for adding the sugar very slowly and until you can no longer feel the grains between your fingers. But the only thing that works for me is ignoring the cooking instructions. I always make it at night so I can bake them for only an hour at about 120 degrees Celsius and then shut off the heat and leave them in the oven untouched over night to finish drying. I found it is the only way to get that crisp exterior without getting any browning. Good luck and happy Holidays
