My great-grandfather came here to America from Italy on his own when he was just 12 years old in 1906, he did everything he could to assimilate into American society, he knew English by the time he was 15 and he joined the Army and served in WWI as a cook, he knew what was expected of him when he came here and he did it. Today, we are letting in a lot of people who are not willing to assimilate, they don't learn English, they have diseases, they have criminal histories, etc. This needs to stop NOW.

I work in the IT industry and the problem I have with H1B is having them bring a foreginer in whom they pay less than me for the same job then have me train them so that they can then take my job. I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO ME PERSONALLY. The tech industry abuses H1B and has so for decades.

Rape should not be a bleeped out word. It is an offensive term because there is no word that is as offensive as the act. This is just another way that we silence victims, that we look the other way.

That journalist didn't break the story. Tommy Robinson broke the story over a decade ago

I hope we all know that it doesn't matter who is in the 'top job' because this is a systemic problem -- greed. We have allowed many of our economic sectors, to take advantage of the American people. It's disgusting and frightening for the future of our country. My husband and I will be retiring in the next two years in another country. We are absolutely worried that SSI will no longer be funded. we'll have to rely on his pension, a 403 (b) and a very prolific lnvestment account with Tracy Britt Cool Consulting my FA. Our national debt is bloating and expanding every month. Our government needs to get spending under control and cut the federal budget.

I'd get behind H1B if i didn't see my entire IT staff replaced with Indians to save the company a few thousand bucks. They were definitely not the best and brightest.

The idea that you can't find qualified engineers in America is ridiculous. Millions of Americans are out there – companies just want to cut costs.

Ben, the general sentiment is that we should focus on training here at home first.

Ben I'm a DW subscriber, but respectfully, you're fighting a strawman in your H1-B segment. There *is* such a thing as an American job. You're arguing that Americans should have to compete with the entire planet for every job in America. I think Americans are due some privilege in their own country. H1-Bs are being used to import cashiers and line cooks. I know you know that but you left it out of your segment. Why leave that out? We already have a "cream of the crop" visa program, it's called O1, but you know that too and also left that out.

Bannon was arguing that the problem starts in our schools where our training facilities are being flooded with foreign students that are keeping Americans out

Ben is unfortunately ignorant of the issue with H1B, maybe because he's not in tech... I'm in the tech industry (software engineer). Most of my colleagues in all the jobs I've worked are from India. They're hired because they work for less money. Businesses don't care about hiring American, they care about saving a nickel. That's the problem.

The immigrants typically do not assimilate, and do not attempt to learn proper English. And because they're cheaper, it leads to preferential treatment for immigrants at the expense of Americans. This has a snowball effect where Americans are simply not even considered for positions they're qualified for. Ask any recent college graduate how hard it is to even get an interview.

If the job can be filled by an American, give it to them. We should only use H1B if we can't find a qualified American, BUT THAT'S NOT HOW IT'S BEING USED. They literally pick immigrants because it saves them a little money. That's why we need to rethink how these visas are done.

I agree with Ben on almost everything. But I don't recall him addressing some of the serious issues with immigration that I have. To their personal credit, many immigrants send money out of the country, usually to their families. Individually, these are trivial amounts - but in aggregate is quite large. And many of these wage dollars would go to lower skilled and educated Americans if immigrants did not hold these jobs. Another issue is the common practice of getting one immigrant into the country and then bringing in a seemingly endless stream of family and friends - many of whom have no marketable skills (or can even speak rudimentary English) and become welfare cases. I had an acquaintances in high-tech for a global corporation. He married an Asian woman who immediately had to have her mother brought over. Then her sisters. Then her aunts and uncles. Then all their families. By cajoling him to sponsor this nearly geometric progression of her relatives, she literally turned him from prosperous, upper middle class to broke. They are still trying to do the same to our welfare system. Ben, how say you?

Jobs in America should be for Americans first

Ben doesnt grasp how much mediocre foreign talent is being brought in. Its truly not just the "geniuses" we are bringing in. I have no problem bringing in the mega geniuses from other countries, great lets utilize their brilliance, but thats not whats happening. Tech geniuses are paid like 300k per year not 100k, and the people getting these visas average like low 100k's salaries. I'm a software engineer so i have a personal stake in this, but I also have first hand experience working with these individuals and i can tell you the ones i've seen have been very mediocre. There are many Americans that could fill these positions. For every 1 "elite talent" we bring over we are bringing over 1000 "mediocre talent". If we are going to keep visas the bar needs to be raised radically, maybe up the salary requirements to 300k as Ben mentioned that would surely help.

My brother, a top level computer engineer, was laid off at Intuit after 25 years of service. This large IT company is now hiring labor from India for lower wages. My son recently graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Computer Science and can't land a job in his field for any salary. He is currently working in retail for minimum wage. Don't tell me the tech bros haven't created an issue for American workers.

Ben, I appreciate your thoughts on H1B, but I have to disagree. I live in Seattle where it has slowly become little India. Indians moving into management positions typically hire other Indians and ignore Americans who grew up here, invested in their education by taking out massive student loans, and now denied the opportunity to earn in the field they studied. The people here have invested in their future, and have no opportunity. You can't buy a modest 1 million home in Seattle without one of these jobs, and good luck if you're an American.
