Well Qur'an teaches us about Balqis- the Queen of Sheba. Her nation remained a prosperous one through out her rule. And she made the right choices (heed to the advise of Sulaiman AS to come to Islam ) and took wise decisions (not to go to war) when her male counterparts advised her otherwise. So it is only logical to believe what Sheikh Yasir is saying is right.

A Azeem

Women can be great leaders There are many examples of this. Even in the Quran, the Queen of Sheba during Prophet Suleimans time.

The Hadith, he didn’t comment on it’s authenticity. But the sounds of it it is authentic.

The Hadith can seem to contradict itself by saying “no nation” except that it will be it’s ruin. When the Quran has a female ruler of a nation, Queen Sheba who ruled well and the nation wasn’t ruined.

We see many great female leaders in various capacities. Although few leaders of nations- which is what the Hadith is referring to. It is specific to leaders of nations. Currently Malaysia and Singapore have female leaders and they seem to be doing fine. Ruin would have to be more defined.

So no nation and ruin may mean something deeper.

There needs to be more detailed explanation.

But honestly I don’t know why it matters.

People bring up such petty issues. And the scholars have to waste their time and energy explaining such petty things.

Shaykh Yasir Qashi I noticed rends to entertain such petty questions and thoughts. He should encourage people to think differently and change their focus. The Quran teaches us focus. It only mentions what’s important and significant.

Good quality men are hard to find these days. Many men are messed up. So quality male leaders may be in question and scarce.

Hadith absolutely requires fine tuning.

What is the word used.. That will define if it says 'this' nation or 'no' nation.. This argument could only be presented after looking at the linguistic anatomy of the hadith.

Considering the Westernized and secularized Muslim majorities and their leaders, there must have been better options for rulers among woman in almost every one of those countries.
We can look at context, but the fact of the matter is that in actually Islamic culture, women are not considered as less for their difference of roles in society and are credited for their support of their society and families.

Thanks Yasir for adding more confusion to the hadith. Lets face it we will NEVER come to a unanimous verdict on hadith interpretation. Finetune hadiths to your liking. Way to go.

But where's the reference for Persia in that hadith? It doesn't add up So I can make stuff up after I get some "credentials"?

I have thought about this a lot. In my opinion, the leader of that Persian empire had all the power to rule and make decisions based on her views, she had real power and authority. Whereas in this era, women that are ‘leaders’ of countries are not really leaders, but women (like men) whose job is to apply the law which the country uses. So the law of the country is what everyone must obey, including the person in the highest position who is viewed as a leader.

Since the hadeeth is in Bukhari, and is clear, there is no reason why an apologetic approach needs to be applied to interpret it. Now coming to the straight and simple interpretation: While there is no Prohibition to appoint a women as the leader in this hadeeth, it also makes it clear that no nation will prosper, PERIOD! Hence, I would interpret it in a way that, under exceptional circumstances, it (women's leadership) could be a temporary option (remember Queen of Sabaa (Sheeba) story in Quran and prosperity of her nation under her rule), and hence all nations should make efforts to find a male leadership. So, I am not surprised to find some prominent ladies in the world history who have been exceptionally good as leaders!

I wish there will be more information about input of Muslim ladies to the Islamic civilization.

The chain of transmission is weak in this Rawayah...Also, the Rawayah is Ghareeb..It is quoted from Abu Bakrah at the time of The Battle of Camel, for a specific purpose...The companions with Syeda Aisha had no qualms about her leadership.

Seems like another after-the-fact justification to me. Basically, a Hadith is so troubling (and in fact contradicts the Qur’an in this case), that the only choice is to radically reinterpret it. The same thing is done with the Hadith which says “I have been commanded to fight people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger”—people are so troubled by this, and it once again completely contradicts the Qur’an, so they are forced to reinterpret it in strange ways to escape from the issue. If you look to the Qu’ran, however, nowhere does God prohibit or even discourage women from being rulers, but in fact mentions Saba’ (Queen Sheba) as being the ruler of a people with great provision & a magnificent throne (Qur’an 27:23).

The deeper issue here, however, is the level of authority we have given to the Hadith in dictating our religious beliefs and actions. The truth is, the Hadith has effectively become scripture #2 for the Muslims, and often not only made equal to the Qur’an, but even above it. This is the greater issue at hand. We need to go back to the Qur’an—God’s sole & supreme revelation to the prophet, to the gentiles, and to all humanity and the worlds at large. It is the BEST Hadith (Qur’an 39:23) from God Himself, and it should be the divine source of guidance which we trust, despite what anything else may say.

Let us remember that the messenger’s only plea to God on Judgement Day is not one of praise for us, nor intercession on our behalf; no, in fact the messenger will declare on that tremendous day:

*_And the messenger will say, “My Lord! My people have ABANDONED this Qur’an!”_* _(Al-Qur’an, __25:30__)_

seeing the state of muslim nations currently, maybe they should give women a try at ruling. i suppose if all you care about is the next life and not the current one it doesn't really matter though.

This guy is trying to do linguistic acrobatics. The hadith put it in plain language, you need to admit and live with it. As far as I understand it, it says exactly what it says.

Why didn't the Shiekh give the opinion that the Majority Scholars go by, to give clarity to the audience ????
