This Scene Angered THE CHOSEN Fans (Were They Right?)

So, there was this HUGE uproar on the internet!

People were furious, because they were saying “Mary Magdalene would NEVER do that…” I mean there are people who STOPPED watching the show because of this…

And the question is, were they right to do it?

Did the Chosen get this TOTALLY wrong…and are they leading people spiritually astray by doing it?

In a recent episode of our Beyond the Words podcast, we looked at this incredibly controversial moment in Season 2 of The Chosen where Mary Magdalene falls back into her old lifestyle.

She’s been spooked by a demon and suddenly starts drinking and gambling and a lot of people said that this was just wrong. That this teaches something spiritually false. That this misrepresents what happens when we become believers.

And so, in this part of the podcast, we explore what scripture actually says about this. Whether we should be upset at the show and how there’s actually ONE word that answers all of these questions, that totally changes the way we look at this show, and even ourselves.

So, check this out and if you’d like to see the full podcast, you can see it for FREE in our Beyond the Words Community.

I'm not sure why anybody would be offended by this, Mary suffered an encounter that brought her viscerally back to the worst part of her life, and it caused her to turn to the distractions that allowed her to survive what she had been experiencing. The importance of the episode is that you can go astray and God still loves you and will not abandon you. He'll still be there when you turn towards him.

I don’t understand why anyone would feel angry about this scene!! It’s totally realistic! As long as we’re in this flesh, we are going to be attacked by the enemy in whatever way he thinks he can get to us. I had a complete mental breakdown last year but was healed miraculously by the power and love of almighty God. However, I still sometimes do battle with the enemy. The only difference between now and then is that I put on the Armor of God and plead the blood of Jesus over my mind, soul, and body. I know beyond doubt that He is with me ALWAYS and that I can trust His promises.
Mary didn’t get healed of mental illness and then become a perfect person. She had trials and temptations just like the rest of us, but whether the scriptures say this or not, she became stronger in her faith for having gone through it. To me the most important fact for people to remember about this scene is that Mary repented and accepted Jesus’ forgiveness. She was a picture of what all believers should do when they sin! I really believe that is what Dallas Jenkins was trying to get across by including this scene.

There is not one person in this world that has not sinned over and over again it is showing that God is a forgivable God

As a backsliding Christian, this passage made me cry and fall to my knees in repentance when he told her “I forgive you”. Never forget Jesus appeared to her first after resurrection. I never judge my Christian brothers and sisters for their deeds, without being complacent.

I actually related to it super hard. Jesus delivered me from drug abuse. I was free for almost a year, had a mental breakdown and then fell back into the addiction. They weren't kidding when 7 stronger ones come back. I'm fighting to get back to the place I was with Jesus. I love him so much, I don't want to let him down

It was good for the show to show human nature. Anyone can backslide. That means you are vulnerable to temptation. Thats human. and yet you can still be christian.

We all fall short of His perfection but we come back to Him because we were changed. This scene shows we will never be perfect until we see him.

Yes, the Bible talks about "backsliding " all thru history. David, a man after Gods own heart sinned and was called on it. Moses didn't get to set foot into the promise land, and he saw God in his glorious form granted His backside. Adam and Eve walked with Him daily and we all know that story. Yes I believe in the process of becoming perfect. And when we make a mess of His will for us, He is there for us. If we call out to Him and repent. It's not just one and done. It's a process! God bless!

I loved that. It shows that we are not perfect, but, when we fall, we ask for forgiveness

Church is a hospital for sinners. to heal us of our sins. If we were perfect we wouldn't need God. but we aren't perfect and we do need help.

It seems very hypocritical to to act as if every believer will never slip into a fleshly pattern or even down right backsliding. Anyone who says otherwise is not being honest. We are flesh and blood till we are made new in heaven. We're going to suffer PTSD, anger, discouragement, fear and many other difficulties. I truly appreciate the honesty and importance of the Mary part. I'm also still surprised at how Christians are some of the most difficult people when it comes to judgement. I absolutely love the chosen and of course Satan is going to put up a huge fight to distract from this very important message. Unconditional love and forgiveness. Bravo to Dallas and the chosen team. And thank you for moving forward in the face of criticism and opposition.

It just shows that God is good and if you doing something wrong and are sorry you will be forgiven. No one is perfect.

Some people make people in scripture, an idol. They chose not to understand that People in scripture, were human. It’s sad, truly. 😢

I agree with the 5 comments before mine. Many Christians fall back and the Lord not only forgives, He saves and restores! Endlessly. The ones who do not return, are like those angry and stopping watching the Chosen because of this scene. They never really "met" the Lord.

The theology of the apostolic churches (Catholic Orthodox Coptic etc) teaches that people can back slide after becoming a Christian. The scene where Mary mother of Jesus leads Mary Madelene to Jesus and then Mary M says sorry to Jesus and he forgives her. This is a wonderful example of the sacrament of reconciliation where the sinner is reconciled and Mary guides the sinner towards Jesus.

I’m baffling why people would be angered by this. Who are these people that think they never sin after accepting Jesus? This is storyline took me to my knees. As a recovering heroin addict saved by grace and many other people in recovery resonated so much to this. When someone who struggles with addiction relapses they are the worst of the worst. Anger, that’s forgivable, gossip, that’s forgivable, etc but not those people who do drugs. The scene when Mary comes back and Jesus tells her to look up and He forgives her 😮😮😮 it takes me to my knees every time I watch it. Yes, me too! I’m one of those He came for at that tent in the woods! Praise the Lord for 9 years and counting of sobriety. I’m not an addict, I’m a daughter of Yahweh who once struggled with addiction. I still have struggles with other things but Hid grace is sufficient

I loved this part of Mary's story. I am a Christian Professional Counselor and I have been mentoring and counseling individuals and families for many years. I see this type of real life journey happen all of the time. God is so good to mature us - it is about direction, not perfection.
