My Artist Tip: Read the dang tutorials! I've used Ibis Paint X for six years now and I've only recently found out that I can close, yes CLOSE, not delete- folders! I have spent so much time scrolling and scrolling through over 80 layers to find one named "Eyeliner". You can make folders, you can close folders, it is amazing! Before you start really thoroughly getting into a program, try to learn the program and the tutorials provided. Sure, it can be boring but you can learn it over time and not all at once. It'll help more in the long run. Hope this helps.

i learned a while ago, if you think you arent improving, redo an old piece. it shows you how much you've improved

6:33 as somebody who struggles with the pressure to constantly improve and be on top of things, i find it helpful to think of your art as a personal journey.
It isnt a race so you shouldnt convince yourself that you need to constantly sprint to progress. Improvements can be slow and i find that a decent amount just come from happy accidents.

Here is a tip: Dont be afraid to draw!
I used to never draw hands, i always did the akward hand behind back thing. But recently, i just kinda started to experiment. I got inspired by Splatoon's art style and how the hads are drawn. And with practice, its made me a lot less afraid of drawing hands, even though they still look a little goofy.
Dont be afraid to draw something that your not very good at, because if you never try, you will never get better.

Heres another tip:
If your strugling to find a style, try finding some inspiration in animated shows, videogames, other artists, etc. Find things you like in each style and experiment. Its also not a bad idea to have a before and after of what your art looks like before you experiment so that you can see what has changed.

That's gonna be a bit of a long comment /vent :

I wish people noticed my drawings more. Almost everyone from my class came 3 years ago and they still get surprised of my drawings, one of them was a girl who outshone me and she gets all the attention. It's not that I hate or resnt her, it's just envy and it's really soul crushing. And now I get to see a portrait she made almost every day while I can't even make a better pose than a 3/4th or a default. I wish I could get better but I simply can't, and I don't want to constantly be compared to her and how "she makes it better". I can't even finish any of my good works because I can't finish them. Every time I see her art I can only think things such as "Why I can't do it", "I wish I could do it", "I can't even fair against her sketches". I'm wish people just start noticing my drawings more, it's almost everything I do in most classes!

the doodling point is super true!! even if you are opposed to doing this, doodling something out can give you ideas for bigger pieces or bring things to light you wouldnt have originally thought of if you didnt doodle something beforehand. even just sketching out some stick figures can give you pose ideas too! :]

i think that a big thing for me is that i wish that as a kid i just knew how helpful it would be to actually practice stuff.
i never went out of my comfort zone until i was about 15, i would just have everything be the exact same everytime and improvement was so slow even though i had been drawing for so long, but then i decided to try and practice things like anatomy and shading and try to always step out of my comfort zone and i saw almost immediate progress- that kind you get when you first start drawing but i was already 15 years into drawing basically every single day of my life.
it may suck that I've been experiencing a whole year of art block because of trying to push myself and my art, but the difference is insane.

My sister is a Instagram artist and has a esty shop too. She has 19k followers and me, who just got Instagram, I'm kind of scared to post my art. My traditional art is better than my digital, but after this I what to ask if I can post and see if I will improve. Thanks for your supportive words! This made me feel better:"D

I wanted to add to the taking credicism one, is don't let bad credicism burn you out of art.

It used to happen to me a lot when I'd show someone a work in progress drawing I'm excited about only to have it beaten with negative and hateful credicism, it would get to me so badly I didn't draw for several years.

That's my biggest and hardest tip for art, not let the bad credicism burn you out, and stop caring what other people think of your art so much, because it's beautiful in its own special way no matter what anyone by say or think about it.

Not even that far in and when you brought up the irl friends asking for art
It makes me think of this guy I know irl that doesn't understand that I won't do animation for him for pretty much free in his eyes. He plans on doing a show and says it'll become big just "trust him"
And like I'm not flipping dumb. Idk if he doesn't notice it or not but even after I explained to him I won't he still doesn't understand
The only free animation I'll do is my own fun or for school.
Also this same guy asked me if I could draw characters for him. And I agreed but said I wouldn't do it for free. Still haven't gotten anything so he isn't gonna get any pictures

everything you said 100%, but specifically the part about criticism i can relate to soo much. personally i cannot take criticism of my work well (im autistic so all criticism, even constructive, usually feels like an attack for me;;), and i hate the notion that you HAVE to ask for, accept, and recieve well ALL critique from people even when it wasnt even asked for.
the only thing that works for me is occasional constructive criticism from my best friend, worded in a way thats understandable for me, which also helps me to be more open to the idea of criticism itself! :>

I want to start this comment off with that I LOVE this cute chibi you’re drawing in the video, your style is very nice and clean and the lines are lovely, colours are also nice and vibrant!!:0 Now onto my opinion with criticism online, I also think people should be at least open to critiques. However sometimes people dont actually give *critique* (!!) they give their opinion.. which I find quite annoying, like no, I won’t change the colour of this specific thing because you think it will look more “pretty”, point out what I’ve actually done wrong and not what is “ugly”. And also sometimes since it’s on the internet and you don’t know the person personally, you have no idea *why* they drew the piece, sometimes artists make intentional “mistakes” for a reason.

I would like to add that if you're in an art block or even burnt out, that's a sign that you're starting to improve by A LOT. (At least in my experience-) Of course remember to take breaks, and even if you come back to your art looking "worse" that's still a sign that you're gonna improve once you're out your block or burnout. Basically what I'm trying to get at is; art block can be essential to improvement and don't give up if your art doesn't look how you want it to
