Two Surfers Race For One Wave (Opening Scene) - The Bukit

Rio Waida surfs for a living, so it wasn't a big surprise to see him fairly easily out paddle the other surfer in the opening scene of this video.

There wasn't a lot of swell around for this session, and this being a swell magnet means most other places would have been flat. With so few other options available the crowds turned up in numbers. At least the wind cooperated and there were a few split peaks to help spread the lineup just a little.

That’s a great example that show how competitive crowds can get. I would call it a friendly paddle battle. Remind me of places where everybody is friendly but you better be alert and in the right position to catch a wave.

Impressive how good surfing technique makes a huge difference in catching waves.

Competition, not for surfing, creates hostility, not everything is a competition, I go surfing to relax, be one with the ocean, not fight for a wave, peace and love 2 all.

About 13 months past. My wife convinced me that she saw a " ghost " in one of SOB videos. So I looked at the vid again and again and thought it was a camera issue or a trick of the light. What you see is a busy narrow street filmed from a scooter moving slowly due to the traffic. The camera pans to the left side where you see people walking in front of shops on the sidewalk. Two of the people are the subject matter of this post. One lady is wearing an ankle to neck white casual dress. The other lady has a dark dress and dark hair and they are holding hands while strolling along.Like a mother and daughter having a good vacation. Then you see the dark haired girl sort of dissipate from the head down. Behind her where she had been you can see the shop that her image had blocked and still see her dress and feet from her knees on down to her shoes. Still walking along. Sunny day and people walking in front and behind them . If I read a post like this I wouldn't believe it myself. Cheers to Rio.

Surfers are all buddies on land…..but in the water, different story.

COWABUNGAH! Just consider for a moment that we live in a time when people actually SURF FOR A LIVING! Isn't that progress?

I wonder what the major difference is - kicking vs no kicking?

To me Pro was a hustler in that situation, Joe had the inside, should have dropped in to let him know

Position and paddle. Rio was better on both counts.
