How Bryan Cranston Convinced Hollywood He Could Break Bad

When most actors in Hollywood land their big break, very few risk changing direction. For Bryan Cranston, it was a no brainer. After an iconic turn in Malcolm in the Middle, Bryan Cranston wanted something different. And Breaking Bad gave him that opportunity. But before the highs of Malcolm in the Middle and Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston had been a character actor appearing in small parts on dozens and dozens of shows. Even post Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston has proved you can't pin him into one archetype. Walter White will forever be a man of change.

After binge watching BB, Anthony Hopkins wrote Cranston a letter, where Hopkins stated that Cranston's performance was some of the finest acting he'd ever seen. This coming from Hopkins, is a monumental compliment.

AMC deserves major credit for believing in this show since it started with some really poor viewership numbers. Some shows are worth fighting for and Breaking Bad is one of them.

Crazy how Malcolm in the Middle and Breaking Bad are both some of my favorite shows of all time. Cranston is a treasure to watch.

I remember when Walter finds Krazy 8/Emilio's plate missing a piece and then said:
"It Broke Bad" *[Opening Titles]*
The best scene in all history

Bryan Cranston is one of the faces on Mount Rushmore of Acting! I remember saying him in a podcast or so that when you get successful or get money (like he got from Malcolm In the middle), save it for the future so that you have the freedom to pivot or experiment like he did further in his career

The original blue power ranger "Billy Cranston" was actually named after him

So he has a couple Tonys and Emmys, now we just need to get this man an Oscar for the trifecta.

Bryan was by far the best part of Godzilla 2014. When he got killed, the quality of the film immediatley dropped.

John Cusack could have been interesting. Broderick would have been a disaster.

Before breaking bad he had always been Tim Whatley from Seinfeld to me. A character that was always the scene stealer in every episode he was. I always wished he was in more episodes, jajajaja. That is range. What an actor.

All his work previous to malcolm and breaking bad had shaped him into one of our finest actors working today. Just goes to show that Bryan wasn't in it for the fame and fortune, he did it for the love and passion he had for it. I grew up on Malcolm and Hal was my favorite character, so I remember being there for the premiere of breaking bad and knew he would kill that role as well. The man should've been recognized way earlier but I'm happy for all his success, definitely a legend.

You missed that he also did voices in the original power rangers.

Plus between Malcolm and BB he played the devil in an abc tv movie/mini series

You forgot Hammond Druthers. A goofy but totally ass boss of Ted Mosby.

I remember watching bryan on malcom, as a kid, and he was one of the best characters in that show. When breaking bad was announced, and saw that he was going to be the main character, i was thrilled because i loved him on malcom, so i was on board. Also who doesn't like to see a good actor act? Amazing how he succeeded. Well earned imo

Man afte renjoying his antics in Malcolm in teh Middle, I was shocked to hear about how good he was on Breaking Bad. I didn't strat watching until years later and the writing/.acting on that show is incredible.

Also note, boosted the career of Giancarlo Esposito as well, two people I never saw as villains

2:42 slight correction: they were well past auditioning by that point. Malcolm in the Middle premiered in early January 2000. Pretty sure the whole season had been taped by then, as Malcolm was initially slated to premier in 1999, before being pushed back to the start of 2000.

So many people I know say they couldn’t get into it, but man, that’s just a disservice to one the greatest shows in Cinema.
