The quadratic function is f(x)=2x^2-5x-8. Initially f(x+h) is found by expanding f(x+h)=2(x+h)^2-5(x+h)-8. This expression is then used along with f(x) to find the difference quotient, (f(x+h)-f(x))/h, which is simplified by combining like terms and then dividing each of the remaining terms in the numerator by h.
