The fact we are talking about this now, after many years of progress in improving international relations, just shows how quickly things can deteriorate when we have the wrong leadership. I'm not pointing at any particular leader, just making a general statement in how stupid and short-sighted our species can be.

I have a female friend born in Chernobyl and was 10 when the meltdown happened. She now lives in Arkansas and is doing OK with therapy. She is currently cancer free with a good prognosis.

Having served in the Air Force and working on fighter aircraft I'm knowledgeable on this subject.
I think it's important for people to know what to expect and what to do.
It can be a scary topic but I believe if something happens and you don't know what to do that's way scarier.

Thank you for straight up information, no drama, no b.s., no politics, just solid facts presented in common language. I really appreciate it!

The fact that this is even a topic which is being discussed right now is TERRIFYING. Nuclear weapons shouldn't even exist and all countries who have them should agree to destroy/dismantle/ or whatever they have to do to remove them from existence and put an end to this insanity. I'm so sick of the warmongering psychopaths who are in power. 😖

IM doc here. Quick correction on iodinated contrast and shellfish allergies. If you have a shellfish allergy you can absolutely get iodinated IV contrast. This is because shellfish allergies are IgE mediated against the protein tropomysin which is in crustaceans and interestingly in dust mites as well. IV contrast reactions are usually due to complement activation from hyperosmolar solutions but rarely IgE mediated. You guys are awesome and should of won an Emmy for your medical coverage of COVID-19!

I live 15 miles from a Nuclear reactor and as a person who has Leah’s had horrible anxiety over these situations… it’s troubled me greatly that I don’t have the Iodide. I thank you for this video and am going to buy some.

Very clearly explained but also unnerving that this video is necessary because of what is unfolding.

Some useful pieces: I-131 has an 8-day half-life. That means in a month It has reduced by 16x. Iodine typically comes from milk and seafood, reducing or eliminating your consumption of these items for 1 month after the accident will drastically lower your risk (and is also effective if you don't have KI around). This is what they should have done for the Chornobyl accident (which even though handled badly, still killed very few people, and few got thyroid cancer). Radiation is a hazard, but it is the dose that makes the poison - very high one-time doses or moderately high ones over a long time have a significant effect. Anything low dose has no statistical negative effect. There is no need to live in abject fear of radiation in our daily lives and nuclear plants release far less radiation than coal plants. Also, the Gy numbers quoted account for ALL the radiation released, not just I-131. The actual I-131 was far lower than the total release, and due to its short half-life, decayed quickly. Thyroid cancer has a 99% survival rate, particularly if addressed quickly, but it is easily prevented in a nuclear release from these tips. The bomb on the other hand is the real problem.

Can you believe this :When I went to a pharmacy to ask for iodine tablets they said they've never heard of such a thing!

Kelp tablets are rich in iodine and are a safer bet for protecting the thyroid in nuclear fallout. I and my family used Kelp tablets during the Chernobyl fallout rain which deluged my area.

Dr. Seheult, thank you for this timely video as I was just having a similar discussion with my nurse friend 2 days ago! I am going to forward this video to her now.
