Part 2: Oil Painting tutorial for Beginners: how to get a painting started! a Step-by-Step Guide to Blocking In

Welcome to my video tutorial on how to block in an oil painting! In this tutorial, I'll be demonstrating how to block in a painting of a woman on a piano using oil paints.

I'll start by showing you how to choose the right materials for your underpainting. Then I'll dive into the fun part - blocking in the painting! You'll learn how to use a large brush to lay down the basic shapes and colors of your painting, and how to work from the general shapes to the more specific details.

Throughout the tutorial, I'll be using a painting of a woman on a piano as an example, so you'll be able to see the techniques in action. I'll also provide helpful tips and suggestions to help you get the most out of your blocking in process.

By the end of this tutorial, you'll have a strong foundation for your oil painting, and you'll be ready to move on to the more detailed stages of the painting process. So, grab your paints and brushes, and let's get started!

Thank you so much for this excellent video. It is exactly what I was needing. I have painted for a while with acrylics, until recently when I decided I would like to work with oils. The techniques are different and having painted only one oil painting I knew I needed help. I now have the basis to build on to progress in the way I had hoped.

Thanks for the lesson. That’s a great technique that I apply in my own artwork.

Congrats. The 3 videos are great tutorials. Just finished watching the third one and looking forward to finding out about the varnish and protecting the finished painting surface. I suggest if you haven't to add the links of all videos in the first video description box. I will be looking to see later on your website for any paid courses. I like your teaching style. Very well done and awesome. Thanks for putting these videos together. Cheers!

Oh this was so delightful. The information is insightful and so cogent. I recently tried to under paint and used walnut oil instead of thinner. 🤣😳😂 To say the least, it's going to take a while to dry.
In the meantime, your delivery was spot on for anyone who may have been trying to work it in color like me. I think doing a monochromatic just seems the perfect way to get the lights and the dark values consistent. I work in landscape, though will give this a try. I'm new to this medium so much to learn, though WOW is it a treat!

Would there have been value to painting a ground before beginning blocking or, would it have made it difficult to view your pencil lines, and produced a more challenging approach?

Sorry. I liked the video content but the bouncy music volume made it unwatchable. Music choice was bad as well but minor comparatively.
Tip for future videos. The music levels should be set below the narrator voice levels in between the voiceover sections. Dropping the music volume during voiceovers is fine, but the point is to have background music that compliments the voice and video, not have a narrated music video. Also, a softer more contemporary music would be a far better choice than music which is beat heavy and inconsistent.

Can hardly hear you over the awful music. Sorry.

I wish there was no distracting music in the background.
