The life of a marine biologist can be quite complicated, but here are a couple of snippets of what my life looks like these days, and what's in store for 2024.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who am I?
I'm Dr Chantel Elston (aka Telly), a marine biologist obsessed with all things ocean, especially stingrays!

I am thrilled to have just discovered your channel. My family has been involved in environmental issues since the early to mid '60s and I originally wanted to be a Oceanographic Engineer inspired by Cousteau's underwater habitats off Key Largo in Florida (that gives you a clue to my age!). Unfortunately I wasn't up to par with the math, so decided to be a teacher instead, but have remained committed to do whatever I can to help protect our beautiful earth. I will certainly be continuing to support this channel as much as I can. I hope you find something within a reasonable time frame.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I’m from Joburg and did a BSc and MSc in molecular cell biology and biochemistry. I’m interested in moving into the marine science/biology field. There’s a great program in Mossel Bay where you can learn practical skills and get a diving certification over a month. I think it would help me in my transition but I’m hesitant to pursue this change as I am concerned about the job scarcity. I would love to hear more about your journey and how you go about finding opportunities for work etc. and do you think it’s too late for me to try get into the field ?

HI Telly i'm going into high school and I want to get a head start on extracurriculars and things - I was just wondering what I should do so I can add it to my resume and learn more about marine biology?

You want to see rays? Offshore Abu Dhabi in the oil fields (about 60kms offshore) there are thousands of them. Literally (the Arabian Gulf is very shallow there in Zackum, you can see the bottom.
Also watch a few videos of Strick & Frans Adventures, their underwater photography and editing is really good and they show all kinds of rays from the big Manta to the small shovelnose(?) 🙂

So in other words, being a marine biologist is a good job or not? I mean why world it be?

At some point you might have to take the plunge become a marine biologist without borders. Sucks if you want to be close to your family tho.
