2011 Mazda 2 Review - Mazda proves you can do a lot with a little

If the Mazda2 proves anything, it's that 100-hp can in fact be fun. That's right, in case you haven't heard, the newest and smallest car in Mazda's lineup makes a piddly 100 ponies -- almost a third of what you'll get in some mid-size sedans.

The Mazda2's fuel economy is underrated by the EPA. With my 5-speed manual Mazda2 I'm averaging over 34 MPG in mostly suburb and city driving. On highway trips I've gotten up to 38 MPG.

I own the Mazda2 manual and I have to say it is my favorite car of all time. I love my little green machine. I do have to say the automatic is a world away from the manual and is quite boring compared to the manual version.

Sure the Fiesta gets better mileage but it runs like a strangled fart! Also, like this guy said. It weighs several hundred pounds more. Anyone ever heard of the horsepower to weight ratio approach to building cars? Honda anyone? Also, if you get the standard shift in the Mazda 2, you will have a ton of fun driving it. It has a short throw shifter very similar to the Civic Si and the throws are super smooth. This car may not be the mileage king or a hot rod but it gives you the best of both worlds. Fun to drive and even zippy performance with 35 mpg. I'd sacrifice that addition 5 miles per gallon any day to not drive the crappy Fiesta that will start to have serious mechanical problems in about 50, 000 miles. Just like ALL FORDS DO.

Real-world mpg is more a factor of curb weight than EPA numbers. Even with the 4 sp automatic, on-line reports add about 4 mpg to the "official" numbers. Just remember, don't jab the accelerator to the floor expecting to go faster more quickly. All this does on these little cars is open up the fuel dump and drain the petrol onto the highway, or so it seems. Pretend there's an egg under the pedal, and you'll get the higher mpg.
