Apparently, the woman was really upset about all the criticism she got about it. She said she wasn't finished with it yet and was taking a break. When I heard that, the first thing that came to mind was my god, how much worse could she have made it.

This situation was extremely inflated back in the day. Apparently the artist did another painting of the exact artwork which was found later on as well.
The fresco is also not extremely old.
The problem was that she did it so poorly and without the help of experts.
In the end this crude re-work attracted more visitors to the city which ended up being a good thing.
Still the old lady went through alot of problems due to the negative outlook from people.
