I don't know if you've solved the Grounding problem my Uncles experience. He grew hogs for a couple years on dry sand land. The North side of the fence ALWAYS worked. The others, only from time to time. The old land owners wife visited one week end and said the north fence used to be in the same place, but only had Chicken wire on it. We had discovered that over time the chicken wire had settle into the soil along the fence line. My uncle put us to work laying out a variety of old woven and welded wire fence, laying it just in front of the fences. He grounded them to the T posts and covered it with some soil, then back bladed. It work every time for the next 15 years or so until he died. Th original chicken wire was almost completely dissolved but still helped with grounding.

Remember your ground wire needs to be larger than the wire for the fence line.

Do alternating electric lines meaning bottom line on the fence is attached to the red or hot lines or positive terminal and the one above it is connected to the black or negative or ground terminal. alternate them and when a calf trys to push through even if you don't have a good ground (from dought to frozen ground) once the calf touches 2 they become the ground!! Also I like to NOT use grounding rods I do a 20 ft grounding ring I use to do for houses built in the mountains and all that is, a copper wire 20 ft or more is buried in the ground about 2 foot deep (some people would only bury it a foot) and just run it along the fence line just under ground. I have seen some people connect chicken wire to their grounding and half bury it and half expose it but they fold it over to lay flat on the ground once it is exposed and this acts as another ground and if the animal steps on the negative or grounded chicken wire and then touches the fence BAM good shock. MANY goat farmers in my area use the chicken wire method and they also have a grounding pole but added the chicken wire as a back up grounding method that works great on goats

If I want to install the hot wire on top of the fence to deter the racoon, should I put the ground wire together in a few inches so that they step two wires together? What if the racoon only touch the hot wire on top of the fence, does it get shocked? Thanks!
