Nikolai Lugansky, 2019
Mariinsky Theatre

“… Finally back to France for these ‘Jardins sous la pluie’ (Gardens in the Rain) where, during a stay in Orbec of Calvados, Debussy transcribed the raindrops or the song of birds, mixing in two popular melodies - ‘nous n’irons plus au bois’ and 'do, do l’enfant do’ - to compose this melancholy painting.”

Debussy himself said he wished for a piano "without hammers." Lugansky, more than any other pianist I have heard, manages to avoid the tendency to percussiveness. Instead, his playing is lyrical, warm, and colorful. He beautifully evokes the impression of a lovely garden in a gentle, if persistent, summer shower.

I read a lot of snobbish comments about jardins “I mastered it when I was 13/14 years old”, “its not as a hard as Chopin Ballade or Scherzo”. This is a full on piece and Lugansky is flat out to create this wonder of interpretation and just listen to the reaction of the audience at the end. So butt out you snobs and technical geniuses, listen to this recital and learn that piano is about your feeling and emotion not a binary language translation exercise.

Yes, there were some mistakes along the way, but somehow they do not diminish the superiority of this performance. In conveying the composer's intentions, this is by far my favorite performance. Congratulations to Nikolai Lugansky!

I’m learning this piece for my final exam, and it’s so difficult! Props to Lugansky for playing it with such ease and magnificence! 👏🏼

Had to gather up my power tools and get them out of the garden for our first rain in the Bay Area in a donkey's age (yay!). And what better to celebrate than this fabulous piece! Shopped around for the performance that captured what I relish. And Lugansky and Argerich were my top picks. Now for a hot toddie and a warm cat...

Николай Луганский играет просто великолепно, я очень люблю его как музыканта !

1:32 Debussy cite ici, avec un esprit certain, la ronde enfantine "nous n'irons plus au bois" (1753), comme il le fit dans deux autres pièces.

Usual piano student: gets a tendinitis learning this. Lugansky: "I'm not even watching".
