OHMYGOD HEY!

Right now in Lockdown performers, creatives and fans alike are unleashing their highly controversial Broadway Opinions over on Twitter thanks to a viral tweet.

While I'm stuck in Stagey Isolation I decided to read through some of the hundreds of tweets and unpack them, letting you know whether I agree or disagree with these bold and divisive statements!

In the final part of this New Series, we're looking at Stagey fans from both sides of the atlantic and their thoughts about Disney's Musicals, Jukebox Shows as well as divisive opinions about Dear Evan Hansen and Andrew Lloyd Webber!

Mean Girls and Heathers and Mean Girls are written from different companies producing it, and Tina Fae wrote the book for both stage and the film and her husband wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway show, Heathers were completely different writers all around.

Jukebox musicals are great introduction to musicals for people who don’t know much about musicals. Last year I bought tickets for myself and a group of 4 other friends to go see Beautiful, they loved it and now want to get together every year to goto a new one. So now when we have the money and the Theatre district in DC opens back up we can go see another show.

Without taking them to something like Beautiful, I feel at least 2 of them wouldn’t want to go see another one. The other two I also brought to see Joseph.

This video series was great, would love to see more! And pretty please will you do more of your most-hated lyrics? (Or most-hated songs?)

I know im super late, but had an interesting thought about one tweet you read…would Die Hard the Musical be a Christmas Musical?

I’m late to the party, but possible unpopular opinion: Hunchback should have been on broadway instead of Frozen.

As for Disney - Alan Menken is one of the greatest composers and deserves more love!

I agree with almost everything here and even have a soft spot for Cats, but I will always stand with Evita as my personal favorite Webber. Joseph might be fun to watch, but Evita is so gorgeous musically! I know this is an unpopular opinion tho

IMO - those who "dont get musicals" havnt been introduced to ones where it would interest a person by just the summary of the plot

I think I have a quite interesting take on jukeboxes. I don't think they're terrible. I've been in mamma mia, and I think they can be quite creative. I mean, the songs aren't the only thing that goes into putting on a musical. There's still plenty of things that have to be done just like every show (including orchestrations and book). The way I see jukeboxes, they're written in reverse. Instead of having a story and building songs around it, you take songs and you build a plot and characters around those songs
What bothers me isn't jukeboxes as a whole. What bothers me is the trend of biographical musicals we see now. A beautiful noise: the Neil diamond musical, summer: the Donna summer musical, beautiful: the Carole King musical, Tina: the Tina Turner musical, etc
Yes, there are still things that are creative about them, ofc. But with these, you don't really have to do anything with the story. A lot of people write songs about what they know, so it's easy enough to drag and drop songs into the places in a person's life when they were written. And that's all you have to do. And you know people will go see it because you slap a person's name on it. The fact that these are such a trend is what bothers me most. Cause one or two of these, fine, idc. That's a cool idea, have a musical about someone's life. But just in the past few years, it seems like we've gotten so many of them and I think it's because producers realize that you can have minimal creativity and no one will care. I remember reading some of the reviews of a beautiful noise saying that the pacing was really off, but hey, it was super fun to sing sweet Caroline. Because it doesn't even really matter anymore how good it is, just as long as the famous person has their name and songs associated with it
I'm not saying none of these can be good or that none should exist but the recent trend of them does really bother me

I love JATATD most out of all the ALW musicals because wits one of the first musicals I saw (on dvd and also on stage) and may be bias but I have great memories of watching the dvd version with my mum when I was a kid!

I love Cats!! It's not underrated per se but I definitely feel like it's very misunderstood, especially by younger fans of musical theatre (like zoomers and millennials)

Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar are my favourite ALW scores.

There needs to be more representation of Autistic people in theatre, and they should not be played by Non-Autistic people. There are so many incredible Autistic performers who would be MORE than capable of doing this

Personally I wouldn’t enjoy west end / broadway if all the classics closed eg : les mis, phantom (ik it’s closed on b way), wicked, Book of Mormon etc

This is how I’d rank ALW musicals I’ve seen
JCS 3 stars
Joseph 4 starts
Phantom 2 stars
Cats 2 stars

I have only seen the movie of Evita and not the stage show. It gets 3, 5 stars.
