Curating Korea at the British Museum I Curator’s Corner S1 Ep4 #CuratorsCorner

Eleanor Soo-ah Hyun curates the British Museum’s Korean collections – something she never dreamt of growing up in New York City!

Eleanor talks about the need for the displays in the Museum’s Korean gallery to change regularly – to show new objects and make sure others can be conserved. Sometimes it’s like being on a scavenger hunt to find contemporary pieces that speak to the ancient objects…

New episodes of Curator's Corner come out every other Wednesday.

Starting off strong with just a touch of shade thrown at Irving. ;) I love it (and those ceramic and lacquer pieces are gorgeous!)

I'm assuming Dr. Finkel was born with that beard, and the doctors took one look and went "Welp this one is destined to work in the British Museum."

I really enjoyed the shots of both new pieces, so much so, I wish more time was spent there (seeing all sides, different zooms, etc).

4 years later and it's almost the lunar new year again! Can we get an update from Eleanor on how the Korean collection has changed in 4 years?

Eleanor, Thank you for putting Korean art in such a way and giving it a greater depth than I have realised before. I have an interest in Japanese art and I know I will take a more closer look at Korean history and its art.

From watching these videos I am thinking about going back to school so I can become a museum curator. They all seem so happy.

Highly Esteemed British Museum: is there the poetry and / or Georgia department / research section at the British Museum? December 4th, 2017 was 200th jubilee of Nico Baratashvili. The Georgian poet. Were there any events (especially, poetry translations ones) held at the BM relating to this date? If so, it’ll very interesting to view them.

Hmm Lunar New Year... it's been quite a while. I think it would've actually been much better if this was uploaded in early Feb.

Once again, interesting stuff!

interesting curator, but the audio feels off compared to where the camera is...kind of like a bad rerecording of audio.

I know it's important but I think this video has way too much background of the presenter and hardly any artifacts shown, sorry, but that's my opinion.

Eleanor shows two important pieces that play with the viewer. Wood carving on ceramic. Then, on closer inspection, the wood turns out to be ceramic too. Did you notice how Eleanor created that same effect with her top? Looking carefully at the "nude" colored fabric underneath the white lace, visible through the lace openings. All decent - no wood involved.

Please consider showing the vases for a longer time and in better light. No point only seeing your face talking to us for initial 5 minutes and 40 seconds. Show the museum collection and keep on talking.

The artifact discussion begins around 1:29; before that is just her personal backstory.

She has such an American accent for somebody from NYC! ;->

Would have liked to have seen more of the objects, less of the curator...
