The Most Misunderstood Sacrament

The Anointing of the Sick is an incredible sacrament with various uses and bestowing four benefits from God. Unfortunately, most Catholics don't grasp all that it offers, diminishing it to merely the last thing one does before they die, waiting until the moment of death. This practice needs to change.

I was an Altar Boy when I was in grade school. I was called by our Parish Priest to accompany him to the house of the sick next door neighbor who was left by two doctors to die. She was already gasping for breath. He annointed the sick. The next hours the person asked for porridge and was around the house the next day doing light chores. She lived many years after.

As a critical care nurse I've witnessed this more than once. Bless you for the care and comfort you provide.

My brother in law got angry with me when I suggested he call a priest to anoint his sick father. Although his father recovered naturally, he again got seriously sick, taken to a hospital. After sensing that he is nearing death, they called a priest to anoint him. The patient recovered and lived for many more years.

I am a catholic-loving Protestant, and yesterday morning my devoutly Catholic aunt died in her sleep. She has been sick for a while and her daughter had scheduled a priest to come administer last rights; however she died before the priest could come. Ever since then I’ve been trying to understand the implications of missing last rights and how they differ from the sacrament of anointing of the sick. This was a tremendously helpful and providentially-timed video. Thank you very much.

15 years ago, I was rushed into the hospital for an infection. My appendix burst and I was going to die if they did not disinfect my abdominal cavity. My mother, called our priest to give me the anointing of the sick. The doctor emphasized that I will not die because it was caught in time, and appendectomies are almost always successful, but this is where I learned that it's still appropriate to receive the anointing of the sick. I did and thankfully, I pulled through. I probably would have even without the sacrament, although receiving it made me feel braver and opened my eyes to the understanding that it's going to be okay.

My grandma benefited from this sacrament 7 times and lived well after everyone. She passed 3years ago after the 7th one. I thank God everyday for sparing her every single time and finally for a peaceful passing.

I received this sacrament when I was 10 years old. I was in a medically induced coma because my kidneys were failing. My parents said I started to move very slightly as the priest was blessing me. I believe this Sacrament helped me through this illness along with my amazing team of doctors. I encountered Him while in my coma and I remember that He shook His head and I woke up shortly after. It wasn’t God’s will for me to die. I love this sacrament and our Church.

I have Multiple sclerosis and have received this sacrament several times. This past December, I got COVID-19, and ended up in the hospital with a blood oxygen of low 80s. My first full day there, the hospital’s pastor came to see me. He gave me Communion and performed the Anointing of the Sick. The very next day, my blood oxygen went up to the low 90s and I felt immediately better. I know in my heart that God healed me. It works! Don’t wait!

When I was going through RCIA, I had a young/new priest tell me the evening before he had received a call for a parishioner whose family was requesting the Anointing of the Sick. This particular parishioner had had a bad heart for some time and it was pretty well known, he didn't have a lot of time left. So, that evening when things got bad, the priest was called to the hospital as the fellow had been taken to the ER. My priest told me that this fellow's heart was very close to failure and if the man had made it through the night, he would be transferred to another hospital for surgery. The priest told me as he was performing the rite, he felt as if the Holy Spirit were guiding him NOT to do the Last Rites portion, so he said he did not give this man "last rites". When I spoke to the priest that day he said, the family had called him that morning and the man's heart had actually stabilized and he would NOT be transferred for surgery but would be kept another night for observation.

I was hit by a vehicle and brought to hospital with a broken back. A priest came, anointed me with oil, said a prayer, and gave me the Eucharist. 2 minutes after being anointed I got up and walked down the hallway. There were still lingering scars, but I went from being unable to roll over on my on to walking without any assistance almost instantaneously. Any doubts I had about the Eucharist or priesthood, I have no excuses left. The priest said 'yeah that happens sometimes, take care' like it was just another day.

This video is so timely I just recently unexpectedly lost my dad. Our local churches wouldn’t allow priests in the hospital and the only catholic priest that was in the hospital was nowhere to be found. I said quit a few Hail Marys and our fathers and we had to settle on a universal chaplain as our priests weren’t even allowed to use zoom or FaceTime. I ask my of you my fellow brothers and sisters to pray for me and my family as we are going thru a difficult and hard time as he was our last parent left. Thank you all and god bless.

Years ago, when I had a compound fracture, I asked for the Sacrament of the Sick before emergency surgery. I truly believe it helped me. It took the surgeons two hours just to clean out the dirt, horse manure, sticks and stones in my arm before they could even put the arm back together. They were terrified of tetnus (they told me after). It was a bad break but healed well. I got back 95% of the movement of the arm back. This is a wonderful sacrament. (On the way to the hospital, I said the ‘Hail Mary’ like a mantra - it kept me from fainting from the pain. Bless you for this channel🙏🏼

Father l, I’m a 30 year old person who converted and fully entered Christ’s Church in 2014. I’m disabled from a genetic disease and when I have new health issues arise, I receive the Anointing of The Sick. I even have had it given to me when my depression causes suicidal thoughts. I love this sacrament so much!!

The only time I ever saw my Grand Father cry was after he received the sacrament. That was the only time anyone saw him cry.
I need a wedding to go to

This is such a comfort nowadays especially, when modern medicine has prolonged our lives and a person may live for years with their final illness. My mother had dementia and received Anointing of the Sick twice and then a final blessing the day before she died. The last time she wasn’t able to receive the Eucharist but she was able to the first two times and it was miraculous! The Holy Spirit filled the room, the awful blank look on her face lifted and her eyes lit up! It was so beautiful and I thank God for this beautiful Sacrament! Thank you Fr. Casey for your lovely explanation and I always love watching your videos! You have a great gift of communication!

My grandmother suffers from Alzheimer's and is often extremely anxious and fearful as a result. Last year we brought a priest to her who administered the annointing of the sick,
and there was a visible change in her disposition, which lasted for several weeks. She's still anxious and fearful, but I'll never forget how much of a comfort it was to her at the time.
