The real explanation is this.... The bottles have energy drink, that spill on the outside, , they get sticky and it's hard to let go. He didnt' mean to be pulled for the next 10 miles.

Well, in each race, somebody's tired on the climbs, grabs a bottle from the guy in the car and keeps holding it for what looks like 5 seconds more than what was really necessary. And you're thinking "it's pointless, but it happens all the time". Also, somebody goes again and again to receive half a dozen of gels then uses one and throws the rest away. And you're thinking "blatant, but happens all the time". So when I heard that Nibali was disqualified for doing this and that the team counterargued that it's nothing extraordinary, it happens all the time, I thought I might look for the video. I wasn't exactly prepared to watch a car carry him out of his group and into the distance for what looks like more than a hundred meters. To be entirely fair, this does not happen all the time lol.
