Unfortunatly ordinary education and literacy is not enough (is of great importance though), Socrates warned us about democracy, he argued that voting is a skill that had to be trained, honed, otherwise people would be vulnerable to the demagogues.

Jefferson talked about the people needing education so that they can make smart choices into democracy. He also made provisions for schools in future territories of the United States of America

Intelligent people want to keep learning more every day. be open minded and curious and constantly add to what you know. Come up with good questions and seek the answers. Your increasing knowledge is your reward.

This is why trump and his enablers hate Tyson. Tyson is intelligent and uses objective information to guide his thinking.

NDT is right, but the trouble is, people who are attached to their religion also think that it's 'true whether others believe (in) it or not'. Science obviously has testability and falsifiability on its side, and religions do not, but if people are determined to not allow for that then the point he's making has more practical limitations than it should.
