It's funnier when you realize that Michelangelo was a sculptor. His forte was statues and the church just asked him paint a gosh darn ceiling

My favorite thing about Michelangelo is that while he was painting the chapel he asked that no one interrupt him or see the chapel yet and one guy didn’t listen. It wasn’t finished and called it satanic and crap and stuff so Michelangelo painted that guy’s face as Lucifer. Artist’s revenge at its finest

Little history fact😊: Michelangelo was a perfectionist, like too much. He would do a painting on the ceiling, finish it, and then restart again from zero because of one-small-detail. He would cover the whole painting again with paper so that he could paint over it again.
At one point, he was so into making it perfect, that he chose to close the doors to the chapel so the helpers (apprentices) wouldn't be able to get in and help him because he thought it would turn out better if he made it alone.
The ceiling painting actually caused him to have severe neck pains and a bad sight, especially because the paint would fall into his eyes a lot.

Michelangelo actually wrote literal SONNETS (in meter and everything) to his friends about how much he *hated* painting the Sistine chapel because (in addition to being primarily a sculptor, not a painter) looking up from the scaffolding all day made his back hurt 😪

On a serious note, if you ever go there you will notice seats for laying down to look at the chapel ceiling. In the 70s or 80s my dad took a trip to Europe and went there, laid down on the floor, and got yelled at for doing so, but his excuse was that there was no other way to look at the art without hurting your neck. Flash forward to now, there are places to lay down. You're welcome.

It's funny af when you see the notes in his diaries and letters about how much he fucking hated the whole ordeal (man went on a whole rant about the back pain) 🤣. He didn't even like painting (in comparison to sculpture).

Fun fact, Michelangelo had not painted a single thing in his entire life before he did the Sistine Chapel. He was a sculptor, not a painter and he would espouse that till the day he died.
