What’s Really Inside the Earth?

The deepest hole humans have ever dug went only 0.2% of the way to the Earth’s center. But then… how do we know that our planet has a solid core that seems to spin at its own rate?

People calculating data to find a more accurate understanding of reality are truly humanity's asset.

As someone who has been digging a hole in my backyard since I was two, I can confirm that this video is true…

The curiosity of the people of who discover these kind of things is so high as compared to normal average person that I am always left in awe about the fact that there are so many people who are smart and curious and I always get humbled by just thinking about their knowledge.

The work of Inge Lehmann was astounding. To be able to cross reference and accurately interpret that much data (which, remember, were just seismograph readings), make the appropriate calculations to make the inferences required, and do it all in the 19th century, is incredible.

idk whats more magnificent, humans being able to map out stars thousands of light years away from a single spot or discovering every detail of our own planet.

Inge Lehmann was a Danish scientist. She was largely forgotten but is finally getting the recognition she rightfully deserves.

She does such a great job of teaching a subject and keeping her audience's attention.

Some people are just so ignorant about math and science that they still think we are guessing at this information.

For those who don't know:
The middle of the earth, despite having basically no gravity, had super strong pressure which makes the inner core solid.

Those who want to learn more: we covered this at uni. Earthquakes exhibit different kinds of waves: p (pressure) and s (shear) waves to name just two. These basically tell how the earth wiggles. p waves are like sound waves whereas s waves wiggle from side to side. Imagine a slinky toy for comparison.
These different waves behave differently when they hit the different layers of the earth. Some get reflected more, some get refracted more. So they go different directions every time they hit a new layer. Different seismic measurement stations then picked up these waves with slightly different delays. Combined with knowing where the earthquake started, this allows to calculate and infer the different layers. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Nobody tell the astrology people, they'll be like "I can't go out today, I'm tired because the Earth's core is slowing down" or some shi

it’s so wild that 100 years ago we needed scientific geniuses to discover this and now you learn about it in 8th grade. i wonder if quantum physics will be like that ever

I love it when people come up with ingenious ways to observe something we can’t see.
