Its also good from the law perspective. here in Brasil theyre considered like cattle by the law, and dogs are domestic animals, so if a dog is hurt the person is fined, if its is killed, the person goes to jail, but geese are classified as poultry and can be killed for meat only by its owner.
On the other hand, if released in a river, the state then owns it, and will care for it.

Also the trick is since its a male prision, only female guards feed the geese, so they will freak out in the presence of scent of men.

Many people here have a pond nearby their house in rural areas for their "poor person's feathered alarm system".

As someone who lived on a farm with geese, this is all true. I’m pretty sure that geese are half snake, half guard dog, and half foghorn, and that math doesn’t even add up, that’s just how scary geese are.
