One thing that Dr. Grande left out was that many flat-earthers admit to coming to their belief suddenly. I would conjecture that at least some have come to their "awakening", during or after a live crisis or psychological trauma. These things can lead to searching behavior, and people will sometimes latch on to conspiracies as a way of explaining something that could just be a chance happening for which they can find no blame.

one problem with this psychologist is that he ie not well-versed int he people of the FE movement. He states - as do some commentators in beyond the curve - that most of them are not stupid or mentally damaged. I think you could say fairly easily that almost all flerfers are in fact, scarily stupid and the number of them with obvious mental illnesses would be a solid majority. So to ask the question another way... has anyone ever seen a (genuine) flerfer that you would call intelligent? How many of them would you say have obvious personality disorders or mental illness?

The closest parallel to the flat earth argument, is the biblical creation argument. Though there is zero evidence for biblical creation, and tons of evidence against it, those who believe it is true cannot be persuaded to even consider that they could be wrong. This is a religion. Flat Earth is also a religion. In fact, the vast majority of flat earthers are not just Christian, but bible literalists. ... meaning they accept the bible as absolute fact, regardless of any evidence that proves otherwise. The flat earthers often refer to their world as God's flat earth. So, this often shapes up as a religion vs. science debate, and a left vs. right political debate. To them, if you believe the Earth is a sphere, you have been deceived by the devil. Therein lies the true psychology of the flat earth movement. It is an extension of them Christian evangelical movement.. They are as delusional as the one's who are waiting for Jesus to return.
