Is 'news' singular or plural in English?

Here's an interesting question: is the word "news" singular or plural? Should we say the news is good or the news are good?

Today I'll answer this question as well as help you avoid a common mistake that English learners often make with "news." And I also have a very special announcement!

I have some news to share with you - in May I'm creating a totally NEW course, and registration starts next Monday, April 22!

Make sure to check your email on that date, because registration for the new course will only be open for a limited time. If you miss the registration period, then you'll have to wait until next year.

What's this new course going to be about?

I'm going to keep it a secret for now, so watch next week's video to find out!

But the topic of today's lesson is a big hint, so I think you might be able to guess what the new course will be. ;-) I'm really excited for this one, and I think you will be too.

Great video. Thanks for posting. My students make this mistake all the time - they are spanish speakers. In Spanish you totally CAN say "a news". Hence their problems in English.

As for the new course, "Tricky vocab" maybe?

Even though this is how the meaning morphed, it literally came from new (plural news) ; similarly, but not used, would be old (plural olds). And it is pronounced as "newz".

There are various news in newspapers. Is this incorrect?😥

@BrighterWithHerbert, May I suggest a way you could make a better first impression on newcomers to your channel? If I could, the suggestion would be to stop using the word, “news, ” as if it was the plural of, “new.” Instead of saying someone, “dropped 4 news, ” a much better phrasing would be to say they, “dropped 4 pieces of news, ” or instead of, “pieces, ” you could say, “items.”Or say they, “made news in 4 ways.” Or you could say, “I have 4 news stories for you.”
