Why do our fingers and toes get wrinkly and pruney in the bath, or in water? This video explores some of the concepts surrounding this phenomenon.

For our skin to begin wrinkling, the skin reduces the size of nearby blood vessels. the layered structure of the skin and the extra space available due to the smaller blood vessels, an influx of water moves into the area. The top layers are able to swell, while the lower layers stay intact and the skin bulges out into a wrinkly appearance. There are some interesting insights into how this works, and some of the hypotheses behind WHY this occurs.

I think the skin there lets moisture go deeper so when you get in some healing waters the water can soak deeper and our hands and feet are always being beat up

To suggest that we wrinkle to attain better grip seems like a rather ignorant hypothesis. There would be no logical evolutionary or biological sense to this. We were never even remotely meant to be aquatic. Not in the slightest. An adaptation of water to this degree would probably take humans tens of thousands of years (if not more) to achieve. The fact that we might have better grip whilst in this state may be a coincidental byproduct, but is presumptuous to assume it happens FOR that reason.
