Avoid Eyeliner On Your Waterline!

Dry Eye Disease can be caused by damage to special glands in your eyelids called oil glands, or Meibomian Glands. These glands are located in your upper and lower eyelids and they produce and excrete oil into your tear film to keep your tears healthy. If these glands are clogged, the oil will not function properly and the patient will begin to have dry eye symptoms. Clogging of these glands will cause them to atrophy, and once the damage is done, we cannot “regrow” them.

The waterline of our eyes is where the oil is excreted from. Applying eyeliner to that area can cause theses glands to clog, to keep your eyes healthy and help prevent dry eye, avoid “tightening” only apply your eyeliner at the base of your lashes.

Even if you don't wear eye liner these glands can still get clogged and you will get dry eyes or stye. Washing your eyes daily and putting a warm compress will help break up that thick plug and turn it into a liquid.

Makeup clogs pores in general. I'm sure if there's glans under the pores it makes it worse too

I don’t wear eyeliner but now not even my eyes are safe from me aggressively squeezing and picking or every tiny oil filled pore, zit, and blackhead on my face.

Blepharitis is the condition name. More than applying eyeliner, its about lid hygiene. Not cleaning off completely can block these meibomian glands. But some people just have a tendency to have blepharitis without doing anything to their eyelids.

I was using white on my water line for at least a couple years to help me look more "awake" bc I have very deep set eyes that always look purple-ish and tired even when I'm doing everything physically correct to take care of myself. Let me tell you I got one, (1!) Clogged pore in this area and it hurt so bad!! It felt like I had a small pebble in my lower lid. I almost went to the doc but decided to do a hot compress a few times that day and while using a q-tip to help GENTLY turn over my lower lid to get a better look at what was going on it was like my whole GD lid exploded... Puss was all in my eye and another hot compress and some GENTLE encouragement later the huge waterline zit was drained and I felt so relieved. Used LOTS of hot compresses and flushed with warm water and saline eye drops a few times a day over the next week along with no makeup (went to work looking tired AF but my eye got better in leaps and bounds and my lid didn't hurt or itch anymore) and stopped that waterline nonsense. Threw out all my makeup applicators and eye makeup too bc I didn't want to spread any bacteria BACK into my eyes. Worth it. Was also a good excuse to get new mascara.

I have wearing eyeliner in my waterline for 15 yrs now and every single time i made sure to clean it all off with a cotton swab and makeup remover then wash them good with those japanese eye products specially designed to clean your eyes, i don't remember the name at the moment but those things are life changers specially if you live in dusty zones

I stopped wearing make up cause of the cost, but also cause I was scared of what it could do to my vision or skin health in general, my eyelashes are longer and fuller than ever and my skin is clear as heck, just be careful with what products you use Edit: turns out I now have an eye infection for my cleaning my lash curler

Yup i caught a nasty infection once. Had a sac build up on in my under eyes. Doc gave me antibiotic ointment. It finally started leaking old eye liner and nasty fluid. I now clean it good and use a cleansing solution

Why would you do this without cleaning first? Wouldn't a non irritating wash or ointment be more gentle? This can't be good.
