How capitalism creates monopolies

An argument in favor of capitalism as an economic system is its competitive nature makes it impossible for anyone to dominate the market. A look at how capitalism works, however, finds nothing about capitalism that discourages monopoly and several factors that encourage it.

Monopoly is the goal of competition, it is inevitable in Capitalism.

Thanks Chris, you've presented another top notch collection of well supported insights.

I also want to point out that beyond giving us a clear, concise perspective to consider, you include sources of information in the description to facilitate your viewers taking deeper dives on their own.

Edit: The Open Secrets source looks like one to keep an eye on!

I have recently written a blog post on annoying adds before vids on YT. At the end of the post there is a list of companies which have advertised, and so annoyed me hand in hand with google. Every that gets on my list gets a lifetime ban on purchases of their products from me. The list is growing very fast ... and I have started looking at what's on the bottom shelves in the supermarkets. There are brands there you can't find advertising on yt because they can't afford that. Win win for now. Banning all the noisy corpos from my life already feels like a goal worth fighting for ;). Great video, let's not just criticize, let's make them pay for what they do. Knowledge is important, acting is paramount ;)

Really good video! The problem i see is that these capitalist societies with all the monopolies and brainwashed hordes are extremely effective in destruction.

If we had a fair society without the hellscape of monopolies we would probably be less centralized and thus more free and communal, our structures of governance would probably be smaller and less intrusive and that would lead to us being a lot happier than the hordes of slaves the capitalistic system relies on, if i don't want to do something i simply don't do it and i probably will be fine in stark contrast to the same scenario in a capitalistic system.

The advantage the capitalists have is that they can force a lot of people to do what they want and thus enforce the will of the few on the many. The ones at the top are usually a-holes that want to dominate everything and they will use the hordes of people to get what they want. They can muster up large armies and horrific technologies to take over whatever they want using the massive capital of humanity they control through their means.

If a capitalistic empire wanted to take over a land where the structure was not so centralized it would not be much of a problem many examples of that in history, i don't know how one would solve this problem.

It reminds me of the football video game market. Since 2005, EA Sports is the only company that is allowed to make an NFL Simulation game. And, the quality of the game has declined as a result. An NFL simulation from 2004 (2k5) is way better than any recent Maddens. In addition (to add insult to injury), EA came up with something called Ultimate Team. Basically, it is a gambling game where they rip off children (according to Wikipedia, a district court in Austria ruled that the Ultimate Team packs are a form of illegal gambling, and that customers should be given back their money).

If the most powerful group is the working class and we have abolished capitalism, the state would work for everyone.

On YT: Actually, Capitalism Is Collectivist
"The powers of financial capitalism had another far-reaching aim: nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. This system was to be controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world acting in concert, by secret agreements arrived at in frequent meetings and conferences."
- Carroll Quigley

Excerpt from article Fascism is the Western Answer to Class Struggle:

"Daniel Guerin’s book ‘Fascism and Big Business’ (link above) should be required reading in public schools in the US. That they aren’t suggests why profit-seeking charter schools are such a bad idea. What is the incentive for committed capitalists to risk their profits by teaching political theory that is threatening to their business interests? Did the lightbulb just go off? ‘Capitalism’ is no more ideologically neutral than any other economic system. That American liberals can’t differentiate between their beliefs and fascist logic of the twentieth century should be telling."

If the natural monopolies like healthcare, education, aka basic needs, were protected by government from predatory capitalist exploitation, (government's primary function!) society would function well.

I think someone needs to tell him that socialism is when the state controls the means of production. Which is, you know, a monopoly. You can create anti trust laws to break up capitalist monopolies. The state? Not so much.

Let’s nationalize industry so we get to monopoly but it’s unforced by the government.

Monopolies are illegal in our system…the gov has busted up numerous companies that had grown to control a market…and competition is proven to encourage innovation

Good video. However, I would argue that our current economic system is not entirely capitalist. I would describe it more as interventionist. As you said, corporations can influence the laws through lobbying in such a way that the barriers to entry for market participants are very high. Another point why our system is not real capitalism is that the state has a monopoly on money. In real capitalism, people would decide for themselves which money they would use. Today the state is forcing us to take its money. The state can redistribute as much purchasing power as it wants by printing money. This is the Cantillion effect. He states that newly printed money is always distributed unequally. And since new money is created through loans, those who are most creditworthy get new money. And these are mostly corporations and states. If we had money that was in short supply or couldn't be printed, we wouldn't have these problems. Solution: Bitcoin.

AI will put the kibosh on capitalism. AGI will be here sooner than we think and will take over the workforce and we will need to rethink the whole system.
