There is a simple fix. The nether portal will show the old effect until you use it and load into the nether through that portal. After which, throwing xyz item in the portal give it this effect

I feel like the best way you could do this would be that every new portal has the purple swirl thing until someone uses it, and then after its used, it switches over to the immersive portals

I think the best option would be to make the purple swirls have less opacity, and then overlap the two options.
However, if you are making it for the first time and haven’t entered your portal, it’s only the purple.

Idea: once you light it, it sparks the purple effects, in this spectacular light show (similar to the ender dragon death). Once it is finished, and the smoke clears, it shows the immersive portal effect. BUT, there should be a noticable mist around the portal (Corresponds to the biome the portal spawns you in).
Wastes: Dark red mist
Crimson: Bright red mist
Warped: Magenta mist
Soul Sand Valley: Light blue mist with soul-like particles (similar to the particles that come from walking on soul Sand with soul speed boots)
Basalt: Grey mist with floating black particles
Middle of lava lake: If you're unfortunate enough to spawn the portal above a lava lake, orange and black particles will float up, out of the portal.

If you've read all of this, I appreciate it. This is one of my favorite mods, and I have some decent ideas to improve it.

I think they should put this in the game, but it only works if you make the portal with crying obsidian since it has barely any uses this would help give it more personality and usage

Why not both? You could have it where you have the purple swirls the first time you enter, then after you come back it lets you look right in. This would also help with the loading issues because after you go in the first time they could keep it loaded. From that point on it would ether be loaded or would load when you open your save again.

I say make it an option in settings somewhere. For a feature like this I think it’d be easier to let the player choose whether they want immersive portals or not.

I definitely love the mystery of the purple.
I remember being told how to make it and having no idea what was on the other side. I was so scared to step into it lol, and when I did I was both fascinated and horrified.
