The new Netflix documentary ‘Blood Brothers: Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali’ delves into the falling out between the two iconic leaders of the Black freedom movement. Jared Ball, co-editor of “A Lie of Reinvention” and host of “iMixWhatiLike” on Black Power Media, joined the Freedom Side to discuss how the documentary distorts the history and loses the plot.

At Breakthrough News we believe in the power of independent media. Five mega-corporations dominate the media landscape — controlling 90% of what we read, watch and listen to. They control the news cycle, to which social media and even most “alternative” media is forced to respond. We are breaking through that cycle.

We tell the untold stories of resistance from poor and working-class communities — because out of these stories we will construct a different narrative of the world, as it is and in real time.

People’s movements in every corner of the globe are changing history and shifting consciousness. But these movements barely receive any coverage from the corporate media. They need visibility. They need amplification. They need a media arm to break through.

We can be that media arm, but only with your help. Become a Patron and join us on the front lines in the battle of ideas.

Yeah, I’m a total fan now. Anytime Malcolm is brought up by the mainstream it’s typically negative. Whether it’s a falling out with a friend or a unnecessary “whodunnit” flick which completely disrespects the political nature behind Malcolm’s death by calling it “Who ‘killed’ Malcolm X?”

As if he were still living in the Harlem streets as Detroit Red. As far as I’m concerned, the only documentary on Malcolm worth watching is Make it Plain by PBS. Other than that, read a book because the rest of the docs are trash.

We need a real film about Malcolm that actually tells the story of the arc and strategy of his activism, and how the completion of that arc (just as in the similar case of MLK) led to his death.

I would characterize the Netflix audience a little differently. My assessment is that such affluent whites would be fine (and even excited) with seeing a more accurate and radical explication of Malcolm X. It is corporations like Netflix which 1) irrationally fear alienating whites, 2) actively blinder whites in order to create a demographic of viewers that Netflix can more easily profit off of with simplistic, 'feel-good', cotton candy political content, and 3) do not want their standard white audience to become radically politicized in a way that might make them question Netflix *itself*.

The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent.

Didn't Netflix made movie about Lev Trotsky? Didn't see it, but some said that that movie united trotskies and stalinists to hate the movie.
But does that sound like there is pattern? That Netflix focusing to make movies "documentaries", about historic characters which could inspire people to fight against status quo - and they try to convince people that "resistance is futile"?

The movie of One Night in Miami was not the play’s script. You cannot turn a play into a movie.

This has been on going with the John Wayne movies and the old west! Falsely presenting, American Indians and Chinese while promoting Jewish and white values.

Malcolm, or Detroit Red with the two white girls and the climax of the scene with Red's conked head immersed in the unflushed water of the toilet. Totally extraneous and an unnecessary scene whether based on fact or pure slander; whether cinematic or not. That scene was deplorable and part of a piece, when considering the racist history of Hollywood demanding symbols and expressions of subservience for any concessions of power.
