I'm on Team Kana for the record, but it's specifically because it is the healthiest outcome for everyone for reasons already spelled out by Ruby. "He acts like he used to around Kana. Before Mama died."

I feel so bad for Akane and 1000% understand and support her feelings for Aqua as the man who saved her life... But no matter what she does she can't be the woman he loves. He's not interested in her genuine personality. Every variation of their relationship is toxic and massively unhealthy for both of them entirely due to Aqua's unresolved PTSD.

Akane is in the unenviable position of having a 0% chance of success no matter what she does because she is not and can NEVER replace Ai in his heart. And even if she could and chose to wear Ai's mask permanently AND Aqua chose to accept that, she'd be the most hurt of all because she would never be able to be herself ever again.

There's a short period of time where Akane had a genuine shot at it after Aqua convinced himself their father is already dead... But it was inevitably going to fail because of the type of story this is plus it still would have lead to the worst possible outcome for Ruby. Aqua could never forgive himself if he allowed that to happen. Additionally, there was still the very real possibility that he would STILL choose Kana the moment she quit being an Idol as the only reason he hasn't pursued her is for her own protection from the fallout of his revenge plot.
