I am Canadian and in July 2011 me and a group of Canadians were on a Traxx charger bus and our bus crashed in a small community called Bonners Ferry, Idaho. The people who came were like you. People from the community. Our bus rolled and slid down and we were dangling over the cliff and some trees along side was holding the bus up from going over the ledge down down down to the dried up creek that way below us. They secured the bus from going over and then rescued all I think 56 of us! God bless those people. And that town. 8 of us were taken to Hospital by ambulance. All of our personal belongings were left behind on the bus in the rescue. Passports, phones and wallets. Those first responders paid for our medications we needed (as we didn’t have our personal belongings) they contacted the school. It was summer holiday. They opened up the lunch room and brought everyone there and cooked us food and packed us doggy bags and gave us blankets and we rested in the shade in the grass. While they were able to secure the bus and pull it out and get us our stuff. A small community like that does not have a big fire station like in the city I live. Thankfully, those people volunteered their lives in their time and most of them said it was the first time those little pages had ever gone off. That’s how small their community was. ❤

Good for you girl. You will make a difference in someone’s life. I will never forget that experience.

Being disabled, I get periodical dysphasia, both expressive (using wrong words &/or forgetting my words/can't think of the word I want to say) and receptive dysphasia (can't understand what someone else says or understands it incorrectly).

So about 1.5 years ago, I had the thought 'I wonder if learning sign language would help?'

Bc learning a new language creates new neural pathways so....

So I asked my Dr & he said its an interesting question and it certainly couldn't hurt.

So I started on my ph, an American Sign Language app daily lessons.

A few months later, I was at home talking about something and I couldn't find the English word that I wanted to say but I already knew that sign, so yi signed it and, wouldn't you know it! The word just popped out of my mouth!!! Easy peasy!!!!

That's I think when I also decided to start daily Spanish lesson too :)

Over 500 days in a row now for both!!! Yeah me!!!

Don't think that the Spanish is helping, but it sure comes in a bit handy when Spanish speakers delivery my groceries lol

I've challenged myself in many ways in recent years. At 56, I went back to college to earn my master's degree in French from one of the best and most challenging programs in the world. I was so very intimidated to be part of a program where you could get kicked out if you spoke, watched, read or listened to anything other than French for the duration of the program 24/7. Then, I traveled solo in France for a month. While there, I drove on narrow, windy roads that hugged the mountainside, and I'm terrified of heights. This year, I planned and led a trip to France with my students. We did not use a tour company...I planned every single minute. Each of these were nerve-wracking, stressful experiences, but I survived and thrived and succeeded at each of them, and through each experience, I grew and learned more about myself - at 60 years old this year.

But I still doubt myself and find myself questioning my abilities even though I have proven myself capable in many different ways.

Thanks. I took your advice and clean out fridge, carried out trash, did a load of clothes and emptied my mop bucket. I have 4 Shih Tzus so my mop bucket stunk. I love listening to to you. You are an inspiration

Thanks so much Cass. Took your advice and went for a walk while I listened. I’d convinced myself that because of my disability (fused leg from an accident 17 years ago) that I can’t walk fast and I can’t go far. I rely on a walking stick for balance. You gave me the rev up I needed…25 mins in and nearly 5000 steps. Thank you!!!

Anyone else here listening to "Try something new and scary like ziplining through a forest" and thinking "Maybe I could wear my Tuesday underwear on Monday."

I was feeling bad, at the start of this video, because I like to stay in my comfort zone. But as you continued, I started to remember things I have done out of my comfort zone and see ways to grow in directions that fit my personality

CAS! My husband and teenge daughter are volunteer FF in south east US. Those guys will forever tease you for dropping a chainsaw on someones face, and then go out of their way to have your back. A woman with the guts to do all that is mega impressive🎉

I'm 65 and I have been motivated by Chef Babette to work out. She runs a vegan restaurant in CA called "Stuff I Eat". She's 73 and she works out. And she looks 40. I'm just sorry I waited so long to start exercising. I have to do low impact for now until I get some strength back. Sarcopenia is a real thing, muscle loss as you age. We are capable of so much more than we realize.
So, as for getting out of my comfort zone. Well...I went to Ghana and got married when I was 59. I'm American, white. He's Ghanaian and black. We are so happy. I didn't tell anyone I was going to Africa, except one daughter. I knew they'd try to talk me out of it. 😏 Best thing I've ever done! Ghana is not at all like the USA, I go there and I experience peace and tranquility. And nothing makes you appreciate your own country like traveling.

Just found out about you tonight
My life is at a stand still and hearing you inspires me. I'm a 43yo single mom and also high school dropout. I need to do something productive in this life and my soul is tired at this point 🤷🏻‍♀️
I'll continue to listen to you for encouragement. Thank you for this podcast

I just paused the video (early on) during my lunch break, and my husband and I just took a walk outside around the lake despite how HOT and HUMID it is outside and fact I didn’t “feel” like doing any form of exercise- so thank you! Many times, once we get moving- we feel so much better and a lot more energized.

I’m just here to request a podcast on how you went from homeless to home-expert!! I’d like to know all the things, but I can see from the comments that you may not want to do that. But I’d love to hear it!!

As somebody who started a PhD in her late '50s, I salute you, Cass! And you make me think of my favorite badass female former firefighter, as well as the firefighters at the fire station that's in my neighborhood. You are being such an amazing model for your daughter -- of lifelong learning, of belonging, of supporting your community, And of knowing that you can be a badass at anything you want, if you love it enough. You can't do it immediately, and you can't be a badass at everything, But if we never took on anything that made us say what was I thinking ... Well. We wind up never experiencing sushi and Indian food! Which would be tragic!!!

I had to face the fear of cancer, not once, but twice. I alsoo had a fire evac and a blizzard evac.
My tips for emergencies are that I have spare clothing, medical supplies, and I have an alternate pharmacy near my daughter if I need to refill prescriptions. Most people don't think about these things, but I have to do it. I do pray for all the firefighters and other emergency personnel every day.

I am almost crying while listening. I had a stroke a bit over a year ago, at the age of 28. I tried to get back to work (too soon), but got exhausted so fast, my partner had to help me walk to brush my teeth. I'm TERRIFIED of going back into work force. I really needed to hear this today.
Also, this summer I tried to get out of my comfort zone:
1) drinking a carbonated drink
2) trying scallops (hate all kinds of seafood, but OMG, that's just a piece of silky freshness dissolving in your mouth)
3) swimming in waters with snakes and jellyfish

I call this "don't be a child, you're 30 now"

Learning new things, expanding your horizon is so good for your brain. Such an interesting podcast.

Back 2013 - 2020 I did so many new things, tried powerlifting, tried a triathlon, went back to college and changed careers, did foraging classes, etc.... I'm 50 and overweight, but it didnt stop me. I got a bit lost over the last few years, ready to dust myself off and get back to me.
