room 1408 is on the 14th floor of the hotel but technically the 13th floor because the hotel has no 13th floor since most people think its unlucky, so it goes 11, 12, 14. Since the 14th floor is technically the 13th floor that floor is unlucky, room 1408 is so special because 1 + 4 + 0 + 8 = 13.
