All season long, we’ve praised Dan Campbell for his aggressiveness and not caring what anybody thought of his decision-making in big spots. That is, of course, until he failed on two 4th downs in the NFC Championship Game. I’ll detail exactly why Dan Campbell is justified in his play calling against the 49ers.

Dan Campbell outcoached himself in the 2nd most important game in the season only to the Super Bowl. His team clearly lost momentum and his team was reeling. A coach would recognize this and try to stop the bleeding. He should have went for the 3 pts to give them a tie and slow/reverse momentum. He made the mistake of regular season aggressiveness in a playoff situation. Where the margin for error is much smaller and the risk much higher. It backfired in his face multiple times and hurt the team even more. If you’re going to praise him when successful on a 4th down decision then he’s also deserving of criticism when it fails too.
Since this was his first time there you hope he learns that lesson after suffering one of the largest collapses in NFC championship history.
