Rare Ili pika captured by cameras for first time in two decades in northwest China

The Ili pika, a rare pika species endemic to northwest China, has been captured on camera for the first time in over two decades.
Conservationist Li Weidong first discovered the rare pika species in 1983 but struggled to capture clear footage of the animal in the decades since. However, Li recently released videos of the species captured by his two cameras which were placed late last year on the Tian Shan range in the Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The Ili pika are found on the Tian Shan mountains of Xinjiang, living at an altitude of 2,800 to 4,100 meters.
This particular species is large compared to other pika with a length of over 20 centimeters, with bigger ears and brightly colored hair.
Li Weidong said its population has reduced from 3,000 to 1,000 since his first discovery, with the species increasingly under threat from natural predators and climate change also being a factor in altering the Ili pika's natural habitat.
