We've been talking a lot about #ericjuly and #isom but a lot of people have mistaken why the criticism is so harsh and why it is necessary before the #rippaverse ends up crashing and burning.

You just earned yourself a sub. Your take regarding the criticism of the whole Rippaverse situation is the best I’ve heard so far. Level headedness is the only way to view something so polarizing. As an independent writer myself who’s working on my own graphic novel and comic book universe, I refuse to put out bad quality books because the first impression is what I’m going to be judged on from this point on. I’m glad I got an editor(yes it cost but it’s needed). indie comics needs to start living up to the same standards as the mainstream. I refuse to put out a bad book because of the amount of respect I have for comics and the creators who paved the way to make it possible for me to create something I love. It would be great to see comics, both indie and mainstream, get back to the levels they once were but it will never happen if creators don’t respect the medium or take it seriously. comics are not a cash grab.

As far as Isom#1 and Isom#2 go, let me give my opinion on how I see these two books. With #1, I saw this book as opening the door to this unique universe that Eric has created. To me the writing was good enough to hook me because it allowed me to look around and see what is in this universe he is envisioning for his audience. That was all I wanted out of the book and that was what I got. Good snippets of characters and what they might be like and do I want to invest my time with them. YES I do.
Now, with #2, to me it was like stepping into and through the doorway to get a feel of the atmosphere to this universe. Again, I wasn't expecting to get wowed by just the storytelling or just the artwork, but to have both work together to tell the beginning of a story and for me it did that. Isom#2 was enough for me to take another step inside this new cosmos and see what it offered.
Alphacore#1 was a more in-depth look at what and who they are and how the organization is structured and how the people within see themselves inside the group support law and order and what sorts of drama can and will unfold.
What I would like to see from those that want to be critical of people stepping outside of the mainstream and bring storytelling to the masses that miss the good ole days of comics ( and I own 1500 comics from the 70's- through the early 90's when I was about to become a father and stopped to take on that responsibility ) and the stories they provided. All of this trying to tear someone down because of what is going on in their personal background is just trash that doesn't need to be aired out. If you do not care for a creator, fine. Say so and then just boost someone you do care for and stop promoting the creator you don't like. No one benefits from everyone trying to tear each other down, because then we all lose in the end and I say that because then no one is going to see what is coming next in the indie and private sector that can bring comic fans together.
Let's stop the hate and just enjoy the comics as what they were when we were youngsters, a place to escape to and be entertained. Also let's look at the novellas, books, tabletop games and pc type games coming out that will further bring enjoyment to a fandom that just wants to be entertained again.

At what point does an “Independent comic” become “corporate?”

Hint: If you can afford to create industry-standard action figures, have a faculty of more than a handful of people on your payroll, and have “warehouses” to hold your merchandise, you’re NOT “indie” anymore. You’re a small corporation. How many “indies” get market pushes from Blaze media?

Seeing all these “indies”, I notice a HUGE disparity in financial weight classes between actual indie comic creators and these small corporations.

Also, most of these comics fall into one of three categories:

1. Small amateur books.
2. YouTube Merch
3. Former pros that abandoned a sinking ship from their corporate employers and now compete against indie comics from amateurs.

Spawn was not that good either but Image 'spawned' some of the best new stories from the comic book industry and Todd McFarlan changed things for the better all comic book writers and artists. Maybe Eric will do the same.

A lot you were not criticizing the story or the art. You were criticizing him personally accusing him of being a scam artist and a fraud, you were also and more importantly insulting his customers for buying the book and being stupid. Were are not stupid and don’t need everything explicitly stated and pointed out to us. We can read between the lines.

I’ve been part of the rippaverse community for a while and have been very critical of issues I have with some of the stories and parts of the art but everyone I’ve talked to have been cool about it. The main issue is a lot of the detractors come off as general assholes, disingenuous or unfair which is why some parts of the community are hostile against people shitting on Rippaverse.

I only read Isom #1 so far, planning to buy all Rippaverse books in the future, and it was fine. Never read western comics before, just manga, and I got hooked. Eric always says if you want to be successful in entertainment first you've gotta cultivate an audience, so the fact that he made something his fans like isn't a vice, it's something he done right. Now, I only knew him from his guest appearances on Geeks&Gamers and it's from there I knew about his Isom #1 campaign, so I count myself as not one of his fans, and I still liked his first comic. And from what I heard and seen in trailers and such, I like where this project is going. So far the story is interesting and the world of the comic feels alive, waiting for more worldbuilding from Isom #2 and Alphacore #1 I'll be purchasing in the future.
I'm not on social media, dunno what's happening there, but I've heard Eric calling his detractors crack-smokers and such, financially illiterate and so on, and he provides some solid examples, so dunno what to tell you.
🤷‍♂

Well, I came here to see why the rippaverse is bad and all I got was why Eric July is bad. Wow so insightful. Thanks for wasting 12 1/2 minutes of my life!

As a writer, I completely understand you don’t want to attack the people who are or will buy your books. I’ve gotten plenty of criticism and I’ve used it to hopefully improve my writing. Eric July’s ego seems too big or too fragile to accept criticism. Until he gets over that hurdle he’ll never achieve the success he wants.

And also you do realize that comic books aren’t even suppose to be making that much money to begin with. The books simply over achieved. But now since we are around that average number that good enough number which is suppose to be around 700k- 1M that’s pretty good and that’s sustainable. He has the audience for it. Ik y’all see him make 3.7M dollars on a campaign and act like every book has to do that but relax bud. The number that they have to keep reaching is around 700k-1M and we all know that the rippaverse can do that🤷🏽‍♂️

So... SOME of you you bought it, but ALL you hate it. Ergo most of you hate it without buying it. Sounds like review bombing to me.

Their not good in YOUR opinion. The numbers says otherwise. The reviews says otherwise. And the whole fanbase says otherwise. This guys comics were so good that SDCC gave him an invite, and his panel was packed af. It was soo packed that people had to stand on the wall. Don’t know y u envy him. Hatin on another man’s success ain’t gon bring u any bro. Do better, and surround yoself with better people.

But what is the problem? I hear you complaining but you dont point to anything in specific, you dont give examples and no comparison. To me it just sounds like you are complaining over nothing
