Whipping a guide on without tying off

Having watched videos of rod builders in the far east making short work of tying on guides I thought i would give the fire technique a go instead of the more traditional pull through, Surprisingly it works and it is pretty robust if not a bit ugly on the ends and no I did not burn my fingers. The thread i used was Fish hawk black nylon in the thinner grade A.

Something I definitely plan on learning when I have the spare money to do it right.

I wish Daiwa would sell their blanks as is that way I can use my own choice of guides. I prefer using guides with longer stems, they are great for heavy applications.

Would love to learn some of the ins and outs of this

What I've done before is made a loop with a separate small length of thread, then instead of burning just put through the loop after wrapping over 5 or 6 times and pull through. It works well and I've even used it for salmon rods

I don't know why I'm seeing this. But now I have the odd desire to try it myself.

I learned the old way but I think I might try this on the next rod.

I always add a looped thread held down at each end with a piece of scotch tape. Can be put near the shoe of the eye. I've tried it your way. On light rods maybe. I do boat rods.

Can't thank you enough for sharing this - I've never built before and have an NFC x-ray blank on the way that people say is hard to wrap because of the ridges it has on the blank. Heard wrapping from top to bottom can help.

Honestly, why not always do it this way? It seems so easy and makes a smoother wrap without tags underneath, is the "standard" way somehow better?

I've had my custom rod business for a about 3 years now. I tried this method but honestly doing it proper takes not much more time than this so I don't think I'd ever try this again. Plus most of my stuff is decorative work so this wouldn't work anyhow.

I would use an interference fit ring, red hot, also would have had a steel rod for endurance, since this would melt before the ring fit

Do you prefer putting 4 wraps on the eye end of the guide and wrapping down from the top, or starting at the foot and trying to hop up onto it and wrap up? Trying to hop onto the foot has given me fits with the few I've built.

30 pound power pro and super glue is all you need. I put 11 eyes on an ugly stick years ago and I'm still using it.
