Then, the community took action. They showed up to every OPPD board meeting calling for an end to pollution and a transition to clean energy. They built power by forming new partnerships and new coalitions. And in summer 2014, they won.
Now, OPPD is on track to phase out the North Omaha coal plant and invest in an unprecedented amount of renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Across the country, communities just like North Omaha are building a clean energy economy by fighting pollution and the threat of climate disruption. Climate action starts locally, and that's what the Beyond Coal campaign does best. -

Founded by legendary conservationist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is now the nation's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization -- with more than two million members and supporters. Our successes range from protecting millions of acres of wilderness to helping pass the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. More recently, we've made history by leading the charge to address climate disruption by moving away from the dirty fossil fuels and toward a clean energy economy.

I want to thank all the Sierra Club members who supported the Great March for Climate Action
this year, especially the Grand Canyon Chapter (Arizona state) and Rincon Group (Tucson area). If you heard about our march across the country, you were one of the few. We did not receive mainstream media coverage but did have our voices heard in the small town papers and local media. The climate marchers lives were changed by hearing testimony from communities impacted by extreme energy extraction and climate change. Many have involved themselves in direct action against the worst excesses; fracking, the tar sands, mountain-top removal, and coal-burning. You can easily find the ongoing story of why we marched, and why we should all march (in our own way) towards a saner, clean energy future. Check out Beyond Extreme Energy (or BXE), We Are Seneca Lake, We Are Cove Point, and the hashtag-FrackingBanner- to see compelling reasons for why we must act on the climate crisis.
