in total, Bungie has lost almost 40% of their entire studio employees. 10% from last year, 17% today, 155 to Sony(about 12%), and another 75 to the new studio being made(about 6% to 7%)

Pete isn't going to put someone's name up there on blast, because it's him.

I'm starting to think they bit off way more than they could chew with Marathon.

It isn't just Bungie laying off 220 people. They are going from about 1, 300 employees down to 850 from the shuffling they are doing too. Bungie management fucked up so bad that they are effectively losing 450 employees.

I need people to understand just how terrible Bungie is at management. All the way back in the days of Microsoft, Bungie had to be pushed to even finish CE and Halo 2 because their management was just that incompetent. Why do you think Microsoft AND Activision were okay with letting Bungie go? Sony is just finding out what Microsoft and Activision discovered. Despite the quality Bungie can put out, they are such a nightmare to deal with and so bad at managing the books that they are just not worth it in the end.

I feel so sorry for all the devs who lost their jobs. It sucks that you work hard only to lose your job because some executive is bad at theirs.

Sounds like to me no matter how good FS did this was going to happen
It’s pathetic how bad Bungie is with management and managing resources

They made sure to include the "health coverage" part after the last time they axed their workforce and told them they lost all their insurance with no severance lmao

Quick shoutout to the editor, the music selection for the outro was very "Aztecross" while still being somber and respectful to the tone of the video's subject matter. Kudos, homie

Fire Pete. Ffs, fire Pete. Better yet, it's time for Sony to deprecate Bungie. No shot you gotta lay off more people because of "inflated work." The one thing i thought about was that interview about giving yourself a decrease in money and then stating "were not that kind of company." The higher ups have to all be fired, and Sony has to move in and take over

"... especially following the SUCCESS we have seen with The Final Shape."

If you have to lay off almost 20% of your staff and "integrate" another 12% of rolls/jobs into SIE, then NO, it was not a "success."

7:58 It’s not that weird, Cross.
The Final Shape’s successful launch & sales were likely necessary just to prevent more drastic cuts and changes at Bungie. The goal for the studio in 2024 was (broadly speaking) to avoid drowning in financial losses. They’re not currently operating from a cushy position. Rather, they’re bailing water from a damaged vessel, trying to stay afloat now, with a longer-term goal of eventually regaining stability.
The success of TFS (figuratively) kept the lights on, or paid the past-due rent… for now. That’s good, but it’s just a (big) first step. These layoffs, today, unfortunately were (probably) inevitable, and would have been even more severe, if TFS didn’t succeed.

I feel like the smart move here is to focus entirely on destiny and not marathon. The game has been through development hell and the target audience they showed it to didn’t like it.

A lot of info is reading, Bungie canned every side project aside from Destiny and Marathon and thus has also laid off the people they had hired to work on them or had positions that were otherwise redundant (like multiple narrative staff).
In short, Management had too many things cooking that were sucking up $ needed for their main money maker and closest to-release project, and canned those projects and staff to prevent the money they made on Final Shape from being burned. Makes sense given we have known for a while they have a high burn rate and if they want to prevent that, they need to prioritize what gets funding and what doesn't.

It sucks, but it makes sense on a business aspect. They likely would have laid these people off earlier this year, but these are likely some of the people they transferred to help get Final Shape flushed out at the last second.
