I found the problem, Piston number 1, there is a piston flop.

EEE my 2004 Honda Element EX AWD engine is sick :( only 167000 miles on it, I sent it to a Honda dealer to have the valves adjusted and they inspected the timing chain , but it;s not the problem. Please comment if you know whats the problem
Also i removed the serpentine belt and still the same noise!
I'm not a mechanic,This movie is for entertainment only, I'm just a regular grease monkey

What the current status.. Did you find a solution? has it gotten worse?

I saw this and figured I'd add what I know. Maybe help . The oil operates oil pressure to the cam. The lifters also operate on pressure, the CAM pressure varies the valve opening/ pushrod stroke. It sounds like a lifter . Timing chain slack doesn't seem would be the problem as the sound isn't on all 4 cylinders. Timing chain slack would also appear in the idle which seem to be smooth considering . Do a compression test on the individual cylinders, just take out one plug at a time and use a simple pressure tester . Good to have anyway as you can also see how all 4 cylinder pressures are. close to equal is good. Even if they are all low. That would be a different problem.

It's the variable valve timing VTEC sprocket on the timing chain the one the big one on the right side when facing the front of the motor you need to replace it or it's going to make a clicking noise or grinding loudly

These engines are known for the knocking noises. They have no valve lifters, so lifter noise is out. Mostly it would piston problem or rod. Many of these engines have high oil consumption (other Honda engines also) because someone was using crappy oil and wasn't changing it often enough - forget the maintenance light it's only good for show, on newer Hondas with % of oil life we change oil at 50% . Also the IMO, 5W-20 is too thin for it and causes the problem since beginning - I would rather use synthetic 5w-30, 0w-30 since day one. For the worn engine maybe good synthetic with a lot of detergents would help too loosen the rings. We use Rotella 5w-40 on friends Element, as it consumed a lot of oil, it also made the engine less noisy. Btw the music sucks.

I have a 2006 since new it has done this I have 150, 000 miles. Did new timing chain still the same, had the valve and cams checked still the same, just change oil regular and keep driving. Have not lost power or gas mileage, and always 1/2 quart low at oil change @4-5 K.

These motors are well known for this noise on low revs or idle . The 5w-50w oil in them is abit to thin when idling so you go to a thicker oil for start ups etc I have fitted 20w-50w oil in mine and improved a lot just a slight noise now but remember this model is known for it so will always will have a little tap or click .

Change the throttle body my was the same and plus calibration on the valves now no more sound

The noise seems to be coming from the Passenger Side of the Engine.
-Check to see if there are puffs of air coming from the Power Steering Pump. This is VERY easy to check. IF it is...replace the O-rings inside the Pump or get a new one (my brother and I replaced the O-rings in my 2003 Element...Medium Difficulty job).
-If it's not that, check to see if one of the Piston Heads has a problem (most likely the one of the far left). While you're doing that, check the Timing Chain (since the Head Cover will be off anyways).
Good luck.

1:51 what is that thing sitting in the black ring on top of that blue metal? Its to the left of that black box with "ED" and the bar code. Its missing on my element

did you try use more viscosity oil with additive to quiet the engine and protected for cylinder scuffs ?

Flattened exhaust cam lobe, probably the first one from the left facing into the engine bay.

Did your mechanic told you why the engine is louder without oil cap?

did you check the serpatine belt? I had a similar sound, it was a bad idler pulley making the tick each rotation

Needs a cam shaft. One of the back sid of the lobes deteriorated

You want to explain what a flop is? Google searches come up with nothing so what's your using this some kind of backyard mechanic slang. And I can't figure out what you mean by flop is it an anagram for something?

Hi . Is the Piston flop the same as the Piston slap?

I have something of the same noise in my 2003 2.0 CR-V.
I thought it was the valves ticking and that needed tightening but after they did that didnt help much.
Honda shop was not sure, but mentioned the chain/chain stretcher is old/worn.
Do you think it would help to change to some other (thicker?) oil instead of the 5W-40 thats in now?
Its summertime here now. Can the chain strecher be tightened or only replaced?
Replace engine here in Norway cost far more than the car is worth unfortunatly. Thanx for putting out vid!
