Netanyahu Sworn in as Israel’s Prime Minister Once More

Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn in as Israel’s new prime minister on Thursday, following a vote approving his cabinet that cements his political return after just 18 months in opposition.

Sixty-three members of parliament voted in favor of the new government that brings together Netanyahu’s Likud with ultra-orthodox and religious nationalist parties, while 54 voted against it.

This will be the 73-year-old’s sixth term as head of government. By bringing on board right-wing allies Israel’s longest-serving premier has placed himself in the unusual role of moderate.

As an American Jewish liberal, let me present to you a plausible scenario. 500, 000 German Jews participated in their country's military during WW I. I am absolutely certain that had Hitler not been antisemitic and had he co-opted German and Austrian Jews as helpers in his Thousand-Year Reich project, wingnut Jews (Can you say Netanyahu and the majority of today's Israelis, or U.S. Jewish trumpoids) would have been just as willing executioners of Hitler's enemies and would've proudly served in the SS and his armed forces. The right wing mentality is the same everywhere. However, since Hitler engineered the Holocaust, ultra right wing Jews are at least giving lip service to their opposition to fascism and Nazism while voting for those who consciously or subconsciously want to get closer to it.
