Siam in colonial era followed the Japanese model, when Japan got threatening from America. After that Japan started to reform the country to be more westernised.

That's the same model to Siam in that time.

The word buffer means that there are at least two forces working together that act as buffers.
In fact, in the past history, colonial countries have invaded territories all over the world. There have been negotiations between the countries that have colonized or collaborated to acquire that territory. Most of them agree to divide the borders...
Thailand has been targeted by at least two colonial countries that have colonized, which shows that Thailand has more pressure than many colonial countries that have been successfully colonized by a single colonizer.
But in the case of Thailand, even though there have been interventions from many colonial countries, it has not been successful.
Therefore, the word buffer is a strategy that Thailand has set up to trick the colonizers so that they cannot use the conspiracy tactics to successfully colonize Thailand as the colonialists have done in recorded world history.
It is not superstitious at all.
