The Rosetta Stone is an ancient artifact made of black basalt that was discovered in Egypt in 1799. It is inscribed with a decree issued at Memphis in 196 BC, written in three scripts: Greek, Demotic, and hieroglyphs. The stone was instrumental in deciphering the hieroglyphs, as scholars were able to use the Greek script to translate the hieroglyphic script.
