According to Dr. Michael Hudson, the Rosetta Stone mentions a tradition of debt cancelation with the arrival of a new ruler. He argues that debt cancelation is necessary to keep the vast majority of the population from becoming perpetually indebted to a tiny few to the point that the society collapses or defeated in war. This was common knowledge in many societies until the 19th century. Hudson's latest book on this is fascinating!

I think this stone goes to show that our ancestors were as globally connected to each other as we are now if not more.

Excellent Video. I have been trying to make a video about the Rosetta Stone for few years now and have not had a chance. After watching this video, I feel like I have some inspiration now to make my own video.

Thank you so much for sharing!

interesting video for the geopolitical aspect of ptolemaic egypt but what about the actual work of decoding the stone by young and champolion?

Personally I take issue with the idea that the stone is not beautiful. The intricacy of the script gives it a particularly striking effect when viewed from a distance and when read. After all, making something attractive and compelling is a sure way to make sure people acknowledged it...It’s incomplete and damaged, yes, but that may in some ways add to an aesthetic appeal for the modern viewer.

I created a playlist to visit the British Museum tomorrow. Your explanations are so great for those interested but without much background in the topic... and it is so magical to watch the explanation you watch at home while looking at the piece on site! (sometimes the objects are much smaller/bigger than what I thought! ahaha) Keep up the good work! Maybe it would be a good idea to create playlist for the main museums, maybe even partner with them and get some funds/clips for more videos! :)

I am awestruck at this stone and the significance of it; it makes me tearful, as puerile as that sounds. Patricia. America

In 196 BCE Upper Egypt was a ruled by a native Egyptian or Nubian pharaoh, Ankhwennefer(c. 199-185 BCE) who reigned from Thebes and was a successor of Horwennefer(206-199 BCE). After having also lost its possessions in Syria and Palestine under Ptolemy IV to the Seleucids, the Ptolemies were on the brink of losing their kingdom. Thus the concessions.

Much appreciated the addition of the first part, about the situation with Prolemeys, which answers a lot of questions.

Also, it's a pity that modern Egyptians lost they language and now speak Arabic.

Does anyone know what the hieroglyphics say? Is there a book, can anyone point out to me the meaning of the Egyptian hieroglyphics?

I don't understand how this helped to translate the words that weren't included on the Rosetta Stone. For example, if the word, or hieroglyph, for 'wheat' wasn't part of the stone's text then how would anyone know what the hieroglyph for 'wheat' actually was?

And as Egyptians it's a shame that we couldn't decode it ourselves.

We should thank the French for saving so much of ancient Egyptian history from destruction and teaching us so much about it
