Every time I get a 3 percent raise, my bills, gas, food go up...

Ladies and gentlemen no state tax a tiny advantage but dont forget you get bombarded with other taxes to make up for no state tax

I made $100k in NYC and was able to save $75k in 3 years, but I lived in a dump, my rent portion was $900, never went out to eat, my car was falling apart and I didn’t spend on clothes, manicures, etc for 3 years. This is not an exaggeration. It was worth it because I had a goal in mind, which was getting out asap and buying a house out of state (which I did). But if you just plan on living a nice life in NYC or NJ making $100k, yeah, that’s not gonna happen.

Fun fact, your $100k salary two years ago is worth less than $80k today.

Can't live on 100k

There's a difference between "can't live" and "can't live the life I want". It sucks that 100k in NYC and LA doesn't go very far but you can make it.

I can almost guarantee you that if the "same" people make over $1, 000, 000 per year, they would still live paycheck-to-paycheck.

I’m so tired of the smugness. My wife has bought the groceries for our family (3 young sons) and our weekly bill went from $150 to $350. Buying roughly the same amount and same things. That’s a yearly increase of $10k in groceries in just the past 2 years. Don’t give me nonsense about it being so easily to control. We buy generic and in bulk

6K take home?! Hell no. Im in MD and currently at a little over 100K before bonuses and after taxes, 15% towards 401k, and healthcare deductions, my take home is only a little bit over 4K.

As always, it’s not what you make, it’s what you keep.

The no state income tax argument is fake. These states make up for it in other areas. I live in New Hampshire, and we have the 3rd highest property taxes in the country along with insane registration tax/fees on vehicles. I paid $933 just to register my car this year. These no state income tax states will always make up for it.

Finance and Business books have been so helpful. I’m 55 and my wife 50 we are both retired with over $3 million in net worth and no debts. Currently living smart and frugal with our money. No longer putting blames on FED for our misfortunes. Saving and investing lifestyle in the stock market made it possible for us this early, even till now we earn weekly.

100k a year is not 8k a month. 100k a year - taxes - health insurance - 401k at 8% leaves you $4.8 a month for everything else. Housing, food, insurance, ECT. So, 100k is not as much as people think. But that does not mean you have to be paycheck to paycheck on 100k. Cut your spending, stop eating out. Most of the time it cost around $20 a person to eat out. That's insane. But you can plan for things like that.

Its because a lot of people making 'six-figures' think they deserve a new Silverado or Yukon Denali but don't have 90k saved up so they finance or lease.

“Let them eat cake”. Who else loves Dave’s multi-six digit income personalities telling people in much lower incomes how great they have it?

I will say groceries have gone up a ton. When I moved out on my own in 2014 I could get an entire cart full of food for $100, now I leave the store with 4 bags of items and it costs $100

It honestly depends on the size of your family, kids are expensive and food prices are sky high now

I was living paycheck to paycheck for a while...
We took on my father in laws medical expenses while my wife was also going to nursing school. We were trying to cash flow that.
It was brutal. I was stressed.
Never Again.

I love how they assume great jobs are available anywhere. Most people live where their job is, and where they can build a career. A software engineer is going to have a much better chance to advance their career in Silicon Valley than they will in Karney Nebraska. Simply moving somewhere more affordable is not possible if you can't find a job there.

I will never takes these kind of complaints seriously as a person living on under $50k. I’d be living large on $100k. Now granted, I do not have children yet but still.
