Is writing on Medium worth it in 2024? (REALISTIC earnings)

I made A LOT of money writing on Medium in 2023, but big changes to how stories are distributed and how they earn recently changed the game completely.

Today I'm going to:

- Walk you through those new changes to the Medium Partner Program

- Review my earnings in 2023 and reveal what you can REALISTICALLY expect to make
- And then I'll tell you whether or not I think writing on Medium is still worth your time in 2024

I see medium as a way to get my writing chops up to par by writing articles and seeing how they play out. Ideally I would like to have a blog that makes a full-time income or make money writing for other people but my writing isn't that point. Basically, I wouldn't pay me to write so I can't expect someone else to pay me. I did have a profile on Fiverr and would only get sketchy offers from buyers whose profiles would disappear after a few hours. But one day I got a request to write 10 blog articles and had a mini-anxiety attack thinking that I suddenly had to actually write professionally.

I’m too discouraged to write on Medium since Tony took over and got rid of the distribution. Every one of my stories were distributed. Now… my views have literally sank to double digits. It’s very frustrating.

Thank you so much. You are an inspiration. Unfortunately, I don't think Medium is listening. I'm not sure what their plan is. I had high hopes for Tony S. but he seems to be making the same mistakes as Ev did. But as you say it is great to have a place where you can write anything, get an audience, and get paid a few pennies as well, just don't quit the day job.

Thanks for sharing, James. Here's an idea for some easy content: How do you film your green screen videos? I like how you do it :) I shoot videos like that on TikTok all the time (and love how easy it makes things when I don't have a good background) but haven't researched how to do it when not using an app like that.

I am new to Medium and have also discovered that shorter articles are better than longer ones. Many short, is better than a few long and well-written articles. It's the same with Google and blogs. Short is good!

My earnings are down like crazy . Really hate how they removed the referral program too. Medium really is just a shadow of what it used to be :(

Someone said the articles you post on medium do not have to be original. In that case it’s definitely worth it if you’re paid some amount. If you can start a personal blog then you can post the same article in both places.

What if you don't care about Medium's revenue system, but rather its ability to rank, pull in visitors from organic search and make income via an affiliate link on each article? Does that change the overall decision about Medium?

Do you think Medium’s changes to the partner program in August were at least in part due to Google’s helpful content updates that happened around the same time? I’m wondering if Medium predicted that their traffic/earnings were about to tank and adjusted accordingly.
