Sleep is a really important part of one’s life. An average person spends about 25 years of his life sleeping. According to a 2010 review, the current world record for a person going without sleep is 266 hours, which equates to just even 11 days.
So, What if you don’t sleep?
The first 24 hours without sleep will be quite normal. You will feel just a bit more tired than usual. But after a little over 24 hours without sleep, you will experience something unusual. You will feel happier than you usually do. This happens because, after 24 hours without sleep, your brain releases more dopamine than usual. But, as you go further hours without sleep, it starts getting really bad. You will feel drowsy, and will experience vision and hearing impairments. You will have weakened memory and decision making ability. And your hand-eye coordination will decrease significantly. Scientists compare this stage as being equivalent to getting drunk. After 3 days without sleep, things will get worse. You will start experiencing hallucinations. You will start having difficulty in remembering details, and paying attention. Your emotions also start getting affected. You will feel extremely irritated by everything. You may experience depressed mood and anxiety too. After a week without sleep, you will be like a Zombie. You will lose your ability to feel things. And, your brain will stop saving memories completely. Some scientists have speculated that the maximum you can go without sleep is 11 days. And after 11 days, your mind will forcefully shut you down.
