Lecturer: Professor Xiaoqian Xu, Ph.D.
Topic: "What is PDE?", linearity, and the most important PDEs.

Textbook: Walter Strauss, "Partial Differential Equations: An Introduction" (second edition)

The course does have several prerequisites, such as: understanding basic facts in multivariable calculus (e.g. chain rule, mixed derivatives, Green Theorem, divergence theorem, Jacobians, infinite series of functions, directional derivatives) and just a couple of standard ODEs.

However, a lot of the prerequisites can be understood on the way, you can also review them in the Appendix of the Strauss' book.

Enjoy ;)

My favorite phrase from the lecture is: "Remember, every PDE is a story. When you try to solve a PDE, you try to see what the story tells you."

By the way, feel free to jump ahead to 34:23, because we are discussing the course syllabus first quarter of the class :)

And, at 2:01:00 we remind of several important facts and talk about the prerequisites in more details (they aren't that bad, by the way ;)
