How to upscale videos — 4 easy methods to upscale 720p to 4k

Up scaling video to a higher resolution is something that can happen all the time. For example, you have to upscale an older video to fit into the resolution of a newer one. Or if you received a video with a lower resolution that the target resolution of the project you're working on. Upscale video can also be handy if you are creating a 4k video and have to use a screen-capture which for example was only recorded in 1080p. No matter the reason most of us already had a situation where we had to upscale.

Yet many do it wrong. Either they don't care, it isn't that critical to the project, or they simply don't know that there is another way to do it.

In this video I want to show you four methods how you can upscale your videos for your project. In my example we are going to upscale a 720p video to a 4k one. Keep in mind that upscaling a 720p video to a 4k video is rather extreme. But for better demonstration I went with a 720p video instead of a 1080p video.

Method 1 - After Effects 1:10
Simply use the "detail preserving upscale" effect in Adobe After Effects to upscale your footage.

Method 2 - Enhance Video AI 1:53
Use the "Enhance Video AI" Software by Topaz Labs (paid software).

Method 3 - Video2X 3:08
Use the free software Video2X which is based on Waifu2X.
Make sure to follow the installation guide for the best result.

Method 4 - Red Giant Instant 4k 4:38
Use the Red Giant Instant 4k Plugin which can be used as an effect directly in Adobe Premiere Pro or After Effects (paid software).

Before I came here, I just downloaded an old documentary from YouTube that's 480p and I want to upscale to 720p which is easier for me to control for viewing purposes and takes up less drive space. I was looking for a good review that would compare some of the best alternatives for upscaling, and considering that personal family videos from years ago are very poor quality, it was nice to see the comparison of the outputs of each software. Considering that the one that gives the best results, and it's starting from such poor quality, and the sentimental value of some old family videos, the price of Enhance video AI is well worth it for the outcome. I tested some old home videos with the watermark and I was happy with the results. It's not going to perform miracles, but considering the quality I was starting with, It is still definitely worth the price. It's all about what your expectations are.

You, sir, are one of the BEST video explainers and presenters on YouTube, and you didn't attempt to sell anything, to your credit. I've been researching this subject, watching many videos (including commercial $ervice provider$ using Teranex solutions and A.I.) and without question you made this complex matter simpler to understand, and most importantly, you presented the results in a plain-to-see "A - B - C - D" comparison (with 533% zoom no less!) that showed detailed results up close. Thanks for uploading in 2160p, it really helps. IMHO you presented 4x as much important information (and did it 4x faster) than most of the other video presenters I watched. You wasted NO time, there were no any unnecessary pauses, all was well-edited, and everything you explained was VERY clear and thorough. This is not an easy topic, and when I watched the other videos first, most were difficult to understand and left me with many unanswered questions; but when I watched yours, you answered all those questions. I'm going to stop expending my valuable time watching other videos first, and instead come directly to your channel first. I think to set expectations, you need to add the time required to upscale a video and the hardware requirements. I knew that it would be slow, but I hadn't appreciated quite how slow, especially on a laptop with integrated graohics, even for a short clip!
