Science and religion just don’t co-exist, according to a recent study by economists at Princeton University.

“Places with higher levels of religiosity have lower rates of scientific and technical innovation, as measured by patents per capita,” said Roland Bénabou, the study’s lead author, told Mother Jones...

Yes, science and religion can coexist. Science and fundamentalism cannot. The question is quite silly, except to those who absolutely fail to accept others having their own beliefs.

Yes. They are completely separate issues.  Like anything for both religion and science in the wrong hands it can be destructive.  But you can have faith and be scientific.

They could coexist, as long as they don't mix.

As long as they keep their illusions to themselves. Yes, they can coexist, but they're not reconcilable. A physicist can be a Christian.

Science & religion can coexist fine,   Actually, lots of our actual scientific knowledge have been gained by priests, monks and religious scholars researching in their spare time. That is people that do understand that scripture like the Bible or the Koran isn't a scientific handbook. The history are full of them. this insistence of regarding scripture as scientific fact are an stupid fundie idea.

Very controversial, what do you guys think? Can religion and science have peace with each other? I personally think it depends on the religion.

Nothing... Nothing is more dangerous to a religious belief then Knowledge.. Learning. The bible states it clearly... The fruit of knowledge is the most dangerous thing in the bible and to humanity.

They can coexist, but only one can be in the drivers seat, For example, with the catholic church, they engineered their doctrine to say that "anything that does not agree with science must be only an analogy". If you go to a catholic school, they will teach you things like evolution and other things that most religious schools try to undermine.

A wise man once said "god is an ever dwindling pocket of scientific ignorance" can you guess who said this?

who needs patents when religion has already been invented?  lol

Saudi Arabia - very rich, very VERY religious. When is the last time you've ever heard of a scientific breakthrough from Saudi Arabia? Or even just a new innovation? Point proven.

Since I came out as an atheist in high school I haven't ended any relationships with my christian friends and family, they've decided to end their relationship with me.

I think that says it all.

It depends on where do you want to go. If you want to go forward or backward. Then no. If you want to stay in one place then yes.

Quality of education is also a large factor and can very well be the catalyst in many cases. Bad education can lead to more religious people. Especially if the pastor is more passionate than the science teacher.

It seems unfortunate to me that the recognized innovation requires taking action to establish and protect intellectual property rights.

REAL religion will agree with REAL science.

Patents are hardly a measure of scientific progress. They may be a crude measure of technological innovation, but that is NOT the same thing

As long as the God that you believe in isn't a god of the gaps, then you're fine. What religion needs to evolve to is a point where we see science as being a means of understanding God without placing any pre-conceived notions on what will be discovered. That's not an easy thing to achieve because you've got to be able to put aside dogma in order to make this possible. That's the way I see it at least.

My father have a theory about how evolution and creationism can mix and still make sense for both.
